Who is the worst/most over rated football coach to win a national championship?

Hey you got to make them fit your arguement man.

I mean, Jamal Lewis and Cedrick Wilson were freshmen in 1997 but they missed the list.

Good point, Groves.

Jamal Lewis = multi-year career, w/NFL starts
Ced Wilson = NFL bust

Am I doing it right?

Let's not reach into the early 2000's. Fulmer getting a win over a Super Bowl QB proves he never should have been fired.

The talent difference is mind boggling. Little did I know that UF outnumbered us in NFL talent by such a wide margin. Our roster was full of NFL busts. Shuler was an obvious benefactor of his college system while guys like Wuerrfell, Johnson, and Palmer went on to have solid NFL careers. Sure, Manning has probably won more games in one season than those guys have combined, but it's still 3 against 1.

Is anyone talking about the 1998 national title, or are you just clinging to something no one has argued because you know you can't win an actual debate?

There is no objective standard that would consider the 98 title team one of the weaker title teams in the BCS era. Let's use some objective measuring sticks:

1) Undefeated;
2) # of Top-10 Opponents;
3) # of Top-25 Opponents;
4) # of Conference-Winning Opponents;
5) # of Times Expected to Lose During the Season by Vegas standards.

Where would the Tennessee '98 team rank?

1) perfect season, something only Alabama last year managed to do from the SEC;
2) 4 wins over top-10 opponents, something never exceeded this era;
3) 6 wins over ranked opponents, something never exceeded this era;
4) defeated the ACC winner, the Big East winner, the last two SEC title winners, and two of the three most dominant programs in the era;
5) won 4 times as an underdog.

Considering the 1998 title team one of the weakest ever or least deserving ever is patently absurd, revealing the kind of obsessive and irrational Fulmer hatred as its only conceivable motive by a so-called "fan" of Tennessee.

Manning = Multiple NFL Starts

Let's take an in depth look at that '98 squad

Tee Martin- bust
Travis Henry- multiple children
Travis Stephens- bust
Peerless Price- bust
Ced Wilson- multi year career
J. Copeland- never made it

Not that great afterall.

None of the defenses in 1995 were remotely close to the 2001 Canes.

That's difficult to assess, as Miami didn't really play anybody that year. They faced no top-10 team during the entire regular season. The only semi-decent diverse offenses they faced put up some points -- Pitt (21), FSU (27) and Va Tech (24). They were very talented, though.

They also, with the exception of Florida State, didn't give up a point in the 2nd quarter of games all season. Nebraska may have beaten them, but they certainly weren't going to dominate them.

Who cares? The last time I checked, football games were contested over four quarters, not one.

I don't remember Wuerffel, but I'd guess his success had more to do with Spurrier's brilliance, while Dorsey's had more to do with the fact that he was surrounded by first rounders and NFL player. The only way he could really blow it was by being an idiot, IMO.

You don't remember Wuerffel?

They did, but they had the fortune of playing against Coker.

Nebraska rolled an even better option team into Miami for the Orange Bowl with Turner Gill at the helm. Miami, with much less talent than the 01 squad, shut that show down. Weird fumblerooskis and such made it a game, but Miami's safety speed makes the option a tough O.

That Nebraska team wasn't even comparable to the 95 squad.

Why is Fulmer in there because Coker and Miles won with other coaches players but the 1998 team were all Fulmer players.

It should be:

Coker
Miles
Stallings

That's just false -- another of the kiddie myths. Florida's skill position players, especially at WR, were real NFL talents; ours were mostly quick busts, especially at WR. Defensively, the talent was about even. In terms of depth, we usually had 4 or fewer NFL players than Florida on the roster, and rarely had 4 or more NFL players on the roster. Take a glimpse at those mid-90's Florida rosters:

Florida
QB
Wuerffel (Heisman winner; multi-year NFL career)
Johnson (multi-year NFL career; NFL starts)
Palmer (multi-year NFL career; NFL starts)

WR
Ike Hilliard (long time NFL starter)
Riedel Anthony (multi-year NFL starter)
Jacquez Green (multi-year NFL starter)
Travis McGriff (multi-year NFL career)

RB
Fred Taylor (long-time Pro Bowler)
Terry Jackson (multi-year NFL career)

TE
Erron Kinney (multi-year NFL starter)

Tennessee
QB
Heath Shuler (NFL bust)
Peyton Manning (NFL Pro Bowl)

RB
James Stewart (multi-year NFL career)
Jay Graham (multi-year NFL career)
Mark Levine (never made it)

WR
Nilo Silvan (NFL bust)
Billy Williams (NFL bust)
Joey Kent (NFL bust)
Marcus Nash (NFL bust)

Multi-Year NFL Defensive Starters
Florida (93-96)
DT Kevin Carter
DT Ellis Johnson
LB Mike Peterson
LB Jevon Kearse
DB Fred Weary

Tennessee (93-96)
DE/LB Little
LB Wilson
DB Jenkins
DB Fair

Riedel Anthony (multi-year NFL starter)
Jacquez Green (multi-year NFL starter)
Travis McGriff (multi-year NFL career)

These guys were all massive disappointments in the NFL. Also, without even examining your list, it was immediately obvious that you left off both Travis Henry and Jamal Lewis. There was only one QB that came out of either program during the 90's that wasn't an NFL bust, and that was Peyton Manning, regarded by many as one of the best QB's of all time.

Doug Johnson and Jesse Palmer had more talent in their pinkies than Heath Shuler had in his entire body.

It's funny that NFL scouts didn't see it that way. Shuler was the #2 pick in the draft - Doug Johnson and Jesse Palmer - not so much.
