Well ....I'd scream myself silly if Erik Ainge got to QB this season.. WOW!! That would be soooooooo COOL...when do we know for sure who it will be?? I am gettn' anxious :)

You know, when I started this poll, I had no idea the thread would go this long.

It was mainly a joke at Freak's expense.

:eek:lol:

I wish these reporters would get their stories straight. I've heard reports that the 2 freshmen are having a hard time with the offense. And then today I hear that they are further along than any freshmen QB's at UT ever. :shakehead:

Here's the way I see it... CJ Leak will begin the season as the starter. He will struggle somewhat at the beginning of the season, but not make the rookie mistakes that really get you beat. Hopefully, the running game will help him out the first few games till he gets steady. And, imho, as long as the Vols keep winning, then CJ will be the starter (see 1998). I think he'll still be the starter after even 1 loss. But add a 2nd loss, and I think one of the freshman qbs gets the nod.

From a historical perspective, I don't remember any true freshman quarterback starting his first game at UT. Even in recent history, when a freshman starts a majority of games during a season, that season is usually a letdown. The season with Manning as a starter the Vols were 8-4, and the season were C.Clausen became starter the Vols were 8-4. Conversely, the last upperclassman to get a start after biding his time was Tee Martin... and he struggled too, but led the Vols to an undefeated season and national championship! As good as Chris Leak finished the season for Florida last season, his first few games he made plenty of mistakes, some of which cost the hated Gators dearly.

Remember Tee's first game? against Syracuse: 9-of-26, 143 yds, 2 tds+1 rush td.

Florida: 7-of-20, 64 yds, 1 td.
Houston: 14-of-19, 234 yds, 4 tds.
Auburn: 5-of-14 for 68 yds and no tds.
Georgia: 16-of-26 for 156 yds, 2 tds, 2 int.
Alabama: 10-of-14 for 117 yds, 2 rush tds.
S.Carolina: 23-of-24, 315 yds, 4tds.
UAB: 18-of-25, 274 yds, 1 td+1 rush td.
Arkansas: 10-of-27, 155 yds, 1 td+ 1 rush td, 1 int.
Kentucky: 13-of-20, 189 yds, 1 td+1 rush td.
Vanderbilt: 13-of-20, 241 yds, 1td+1 rush td.
SEC Championship: 15-of-32, 208 yds, 2 tds, 1 int.
National Championship: 11-of-18, 278 yds, 2 tds :number1:

Tee Martin had the intangibles of leadership and the will to win no matter what. Remember to have some patience with CJ, as long as he doesn't make the big mistakes, during the first few games. If Riggs finally gets it together, and CJ is a steady veteran qb, this could be a very special season.

If one of the freshman finishes the season as starter, the Vols will probably end up with no better than 8 wins 'cause that means that the veteran qbs lost a few and the coaches set the sites on the future.

Expect the freshmen for LaTech.

I expect them to get some playing time, but unless Leak gets hurt or the Vols lose to both UNLV and Florida (and that is a huge if) then I fully expect him to be starting against La Tech.

I really really hope not, because then I think the Vols are looking at an 8-4 season if they have to go to a freshman quarterback to lead the offense. My hopes are that CJ Leak develops into a solid, not spectacular, starter. I think back to Daryl Dickey.... he was not spectacular, but he just did not make mistakes. From the reports so far from the practices, Leak is the only qb that is not making the mistakes.... however, he's not making the spectacular plays either. Of course I remember my h.s. basketball coach say, "make good passes, don't try to make great passes." He understood that, if I might add to Gen. Neyland's comment--- only 3 things can happen when you (try to make a great) pass (instead of a good pass) and 2 of them are bad.

Now, I'm not saying that a freshman quarterback can't come in and win right away... its been done before.... especially if the rest of the offense around the guy pick up the slack. However, unlike Mike Vick and the Hokies, the SEC ain't the Big East. Freshman quarterbacks just don't waltz into the SEC and win it all.

As up in the air as things may seem, it can't possibly be as bad as 2000 when Clausen got hurt just before the season and we opened with Joey Matthews at QB. I'll never forget the Georgia game that year and having to endure A.J. Suggs putting it up 65 times. I wanted to jump through the TV.
