Why, Rick Barnes?

Refs can be bad it works both ways. He singled out as you have one fan base. It is true in all sports in all leagues, NFL, MLB, and other major sports. Sometimes the calls make a difference sometimes they do not.

What has Barnes done to change it? he serves on the rules committee. Coaches very rarely mention refs in any sport, I wonder why? Great example is the Chiefs - Eagles Super Bowl game. Refs had affect on the outcome of the game? we had a Ref conspiracy before the game and the Eagles took that aspect away by beating them soundly. Fans need someone to blame.

We lost some games based on bad refs in all sports. So have a lot of other teams, but it is not so much the refs as it is consistency by both the team and the Refs. Kentucky did not beat us because of the Refs although they were not consistent, we lost because we had no shows in the game.

So get over it and stay away from the Ref thing vs endorsing the potential childlike troll.
Or the potential know it all...Your opinion is no different than anyone's.

This is an opinion board...Too many just wear orange colored glasses...worship the coach...and go nuts when anyone's opinion doesn't toe the Vol line. Many here wants hummingbirds and butterfly's...And don't dare question anything or the board todies will come out. It's hilarious l

Sure, but how long can we accept mediocrity when it comes to getting over the big games and making it to the Final 4? We are a very good team but don't we want to be GREAT??
This sounds reasonable an all, but it isn't so easy to find that next coach that is going to necessarily get you farther than Barnes.
They'd have to get to a final 4 to justify getting rid of Barnes for them. Only 4 teams out of hundreds make it in any given year.
Whoever comes here next is going to have some awful big shoes to fill.

Elite 8s and SEC titles is not mediocrity. This season is not over either. Tennessee is capable of making a run in the NCAA. Who is out there that you think could do better at Tennessee and would be willing to take the job. Not many. We all would like to see Tennessee do better, but where Tennessee is at right now, it would be hard to duplicate for anybody. Barnes will gone soon enough.

So what happened 20-30 years ago had a bearing on a KY coach that 90% of people had never heard of when he was hired and threw a team together in very short order because of transfers and defections and then butt whipping us twice in 3 weeks?

Good - get tough!!!

Not true. With unbalanced schedules, conference standings don’t matter. We had the second most Q1 wins going into last night. This is the time of year some posters don’t understand what the committee uses.
The committee who changes their criteria literally every year? So you’re saying this team is a #1 seed without winning out? If we go 11-7 in the league (losses I mentioned) no matter how good it is, it’s not getting a 1 seed. The committee is typically made up of lazy, ill-informed, biased horse traders with agendas; don’t act like they’re actually good at what they do.

I am beginning to believe we would be better off with a 2 seed in our area than travelling across the country to play in a game. 2 seed would put us closer to home.

Seeding is not an art it is a crapshoot of whatever the committee can kind of justify. A 2 or 3 seed is fine with me. We should have been a 1 Seed several times in the past years but face it the Committee's game never follows the chalk line anyway. So it is a guessing game. The seeding is a social and good ole boy selection committee. Duke could lose 2 more games and chances are they will be a one seed.
How much BS committee chairs state to justify the committee's reasoning for this or that is just for the show with intent to get off the air as soon as possible.

I tend to agree. This year is kind of unique without a couple of dominating teams or players to avoid. Any of the top 16 has a pretty good chance to win 6 in a row. Any of the top 16 has a good chance of defeating any other S16 opponent. The seeding this year just kind of determines what order they’ll face each other. Avoiding a bad matchup in round 2 is important. Not traveling too far as you’ve pointed out as well. Plus if we’re a #1 seed, we don’t get to wear the orange uniforms until the FF.

We are kind of the same boat as Football. We have upgraded our program to a consistent winner but we can't get to that next level of competing among the elite. Our system is getting a little stale and we are missing out on the recruiting trail.

I still trust Barnes to get things turned around and I think we probably overachieved the first half of this year but I am not optimistic about this team advancing very far in March.

The reality is Knoxville isn’t that great of a city which makes recruiting harder than it should be. It’s a very conservative city in a very conservative state in a very conservative region of the country. The cops in Knoxville and on campus seem excited about possibly getting to arrest an athlete. It isn’t like that in Tuscaloosa or Athens.

Ray Mears could recruit, three of the five numbers hanging in Food City were Mears' players, the fiasco with Kentucky and Vanderbilt should show Barnes the type players he should be recruiting

Coach Barnes up, Coach Truff! You must be joking and I must have missed the sarcasm! There was no rating system back then and it was all $$$$$
