He was struggling to even get back on script after the slap, at no point did he miss a beat after the joke. And awkard was after the slap....there was no real awkwardness before that until Will Smith realized Jada was pissed.

Yeah, it was so not awkward he felt compelled to say "come on, that was a nice one." Comedians editorializing their own jokes is not a great sign.

He was saying it to her at her reaction.

I don't know how in the hell you can call that "awkward" when about 30 seconds later the entire place was stone silent and Chris Rock was having trouble composing himself to even get through his presentation. THAT was the definition of awkward.

The two are not mutually exclusive

She was to his right and he's looking dead center when he says it. Not sure about that.

Generate excitement back to the Oscars and get people talking. It’s hardly been paid attention to the last couple of years. I’m like 95 percent sure that it was planned.

But you haven't explained why Will Smith and Chris Rock care about excitement for the Oscars more than they care about their own careers and reputations?

You present it as a certainty this was staged and I can't really go there. Not saying it couldn't have been but certainty either way seems dubious. Hell, I think there's as much chance Smith (unscripted) ad-libbed a moment to grandstand than the whole thing being set up from the start.

I feel like they kinda go together because a big part of the narrative is the slap ruins his big night. I don't think that many people are going to forget he won, but the slap will be why so many people remember that he won.
