Would you guys be happy with a recruiting class like this?

even when Dooley was his RC when he came from MSU and was unheard of?

Yes. Saban wasn't exactly "unheard" of. A lot of people thought he would end up a good coach. When Saban went to a fertile recruiting ground like Louisiana, it was game over. Nick Saban is the best recruiter in the game.

I'm sorry guy but you need to know your facts. Saban did nothing special at his prior gig before LSU. He was 34-24-1 at MSU with NO BOWL wins and a loss in both the Sun and Aloha. DD had nothing to sell recruits. Saban was not the Saban that the world knows of now. He was a middle of the pack coach in the Big 10 who's claim to fame was finishing second in the BIg 10 his final year. He wasn't coming off a BCS championship, not returning from the Dolphins, he wasn't that much better record wise or bowl wise than DD.

Remember he was 9-2 his last season at MSU. Prior to that, he was on a very hot seat. He had not shown evidence that he was turning them around. As a matter of fact... he didn't. The Spartans are still hit and miss just like before.

So? Doesn't mean anything if he can't coach. Right now, the verdict is out on Derek Dooley as a recruiter. He did a good job saving the 10' class. I'm a little underwhelmed right now with the 11' class. We'll see.

Edit: Any one of us could be RC for Nick Saban and pull in a top-10 class also.
We all said the same thing about Chizik. Horrible record as a coach but he comes to Auburn last year and now I don't hear everyone saying that it was stupid decision anymore. I ate crow on that one and am pretty sure a whole lot more have too.

Agree. He needs a top-10 class.

I didn't say that. If he gets a class where 50% of the 3* players he lands are playing at a national championship level in 2 or 3 years... UT will be fine talent wise. Since those with talent will play early, it may not take that long to get them up to speed.

Dude, you can't do that. You can't back track like that and rip on DD still. The same thing has been said about DD. Alot of people have been saying they think he will be a great coach. I could just as easily say Saban would have never ended up where he is without DD recruiting for him and DD helped get Saban on top at LSU. I could just as easily spin it the other way. That's why Saban took DD everywhere with him because he needed the guy. That view point is crap too. Reality is, DD and Saban built LSU together. Reality is Saban really likes and trust DD. And reality is, there are players on our roster right now who went on the record and stated that they would not have come here under Kiffin and that only after TWO WEEKS DD convienced them to come to UT. DD can recruit.

4stars- 10
3stars- 12
2stars- 3

3.28 star avg.

and what number would like for the Vols class to be ranked?

just wanna see where the boards expectations really are.

TIA

I'd be happy with a class that stays here and wins games, tbh.

Right. He was widely discussed as a coach that had to win to save his job.

Prior to that last season at MSU many more thought he was a flop. FWIW, many people think Dooley will end up a good coach... apparently including Saban.

his first 4 years at MSU he was 1 or 2 game above .500. then he had a very good 5th and got the LSU job. he was not overly impressive at MSU.

nobody had a clue he would become the best recruiter in 1999.

hindsight is 20/20

Last year at this exact date, Auburn had this class:

4stars- 1
3stars- 5
NR- 1

they ended up with the 4th ranked class in the country.

for comparison, Tennessee has:

3stars- 6
NR- 1

Wow, your dumb. Let's take a look at the resume that is Nick Saban.

1) Taking over at Toledo, who went 6-5 the previous two years, Saban then went 9-2 in his first year.

2) Saban was then hired the next year by Bill Belichick to become D-coordinator

3) In 1995, Michigan State had ZERO winning seasons in the decade. Not only that, but they were under recruiting sanctions that were levied because of the previous coach. Despite the recruiting violations, he managed the win for 4 straight years, going 25-21-1. Not the best record ever, but still pretty good for a middling Big Ten team dealing with recruiting violations. He then went on to beat #1 Ohio State at Ohio State in 1998.

4) In 1999, he leads Michigan State to their best record in 50 years, going 9-2, beating Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Penn State.

That resume is a hell of a lot better than Dooley's. His last year was the kicker. Had he had that record and had dropped, like Dooley then, I would say not impressive. But he was improving that program and making them become a force to deal with.

Trust me, in a couple years, Chizik will be on the hot seat. Tommy Tuberville would have done just the same as he did.

Guess you guys didn't know they were handed recruiting violations when Saban took over thanks to the previous coach?

Only Saban and DD knows how well DD recruited on his own at LSU and honestly I think Saban has already got a time table in his head now on when DD will become a real problem to win a game against. I also think LT is a huge part of our staff and that DD and him like working together and Lance is going to stick around for a while.

Carroll thought Ed Orgeron would make a good coach...what's your point?

What were the penalties? If he lost a couple of scholarships a year... how does that compare in real terms to the situation Dooley just inherited at UT? But it seems you want to criticize Dooley and excuse Saban?

Most definitely. We aren't in a position as a program right now to compete on the level we once did. Give it a couple years with player development and some stability, and we should be in 10x better shape than we currently are.

Sorry, this whole "We are Tennessee, we can pull who we want" argument isn't realistic right now. Need kids who will buy in and bleed on the field for us.

I hate this reality.

Wins are wins. Recruits don't care about what mess you walked into at the previous school. Fact is, his record was nothing special. You can spin it all you want. It's a fact. Just deal with it and move on.

I can't find exactly what were the penalties, but I know that they were accused of doctoring grades and the NCAA said that they had been given the "lack of institutional control" card. So it wasn't a scholly here and scholly there type issue.

Back to the original question. If we pull that class 4years in a row and keep 99% of them through their junior year and some through the senior year we are competing at a high level. That class would have us playing for the SEC CG this year.
