Would you guys be happy with a recruiting class like this?

Carroll thought Ed Orgeron would make a good coach...what's your point?

My point is if you are going to make a point like you did you have to be willing to apply your standard evenly.

Saban had alot of detractors when he left MSU. They were wrong. Dooley has some detractors among Vol fans and also some "kool aid drinkers"... but the rational, reasonable position is simply to watch and evaluate what he actually does.

Right now he seems to be on his way to building a decent recruiting class that answers UT's main needs.

Wins are wins. Recruits don't care about what mess you walked into at the previous school. Fact is, his record was nothing special. You can spin it all you want. It's a fact. Just deal with it and move on.

Did I say his win record was great? No. But I do know that having the best record in the last 50 years for your school is pretty good your last season at the helm.

With the staff he has he's bound to have a good recruiting class, whether he's a good recruiter or not.

About the Bold part: We can't have a "decent" recruiting class. That's a top-25 class. UT is not in a position for that. We have to have very good to great recruiting class to get back to championships.

I'd like to have another top 10 class.....but I'm guessing we end up more in the 15-20 range

Which would be okay, but we really need a top-10 class, especially if we get a couple top lineman and DT's.

In their own way, I think this staff is reasonably comparable to the last one in recruiting. I think Kiffin gave us alot more to talk about with his shot gun approach. DD is more targeted. I think DD is less worried about image and recruiting svcs... but I think the net result will be reasonably close.

FWIW, every kid or parent that has spoken out concerning DD has indicated he's a good recruiter and salesman of UT.

Don't get caught up on semantics. A "decent" class at UT IMO is top 20. And no, the one thing Saban's 07 class clearly demonstrates is that you don't need a Rivals stamp of approval to find players who can play for championships.

1) I think the staff right now is good, but not what last year's was. Still a very solid staff.

2) You still need star players. Go look at the top 10 of rivals the last five years and those are programs that are consistently in the top 10.

3) I didn't say CDD wasn't a good recruiter. I was just saying he is going to recruit well enough because of his staff.

4) Thank you for defining decent. I wasn't sure was decent was, at least, in your standards. We need better than decent ever year, but especially for 2011.

I am comfortable with what this staff and in particular Dooley has shown in evaluating talent and recruiting. I base that on his salvaging and building on to the '10 class, that he has UT in on numerous high end recruits, that he has a well conceived plan of attack, and... maybe the biggest factor.... he's played the pied piper for Saban, Meyer, et al with several recruits already. He had a long way to go from being as far behind as he was to getting ahead of those guys on evals... he did it to at least a small extent within 4 months.

My hope was that if Dooley couldn't win, he would set the next guy up with a much better roster than he inherited. I feel pretty good about that right now.

My remaining concern with Dooley is whether he and this staff can coach or not. If they can coach, do they make a great staff when combined?

I differ with many here on Kiffin. I think he is a very talented football coach above and beyond his recruiting abilities. I honestly don't know if Dooley is. Kiffin and staff flat outcoached Meyer, Richt, Spurrier, and Saban last year. I'd like to see Dooley do that before deciding whether he's a coach or not.

This was Alabama's 2007 class. Saban's first full class of entirely his recruits was 2008.

5 stars - 3
4 stars - 19
3 stars - 8
2 stars - 2

Ok let's look at both arguments

Dooley's first recruiting class 2010...

5 stars - 1
4 stars - 12
3 stars - 10
2 stars - 4

Saban's first recruiting class 2007...

5 stars - 0
4 stars - 10
3 stars - 12
2 stars - 3

Now looking back at what Saban had at this point into the 2008 recruiting class versus Dooley's this year...

Dooley...

5 stars - 0
4 stars - 0
3 stars - 6
2 stars - 1

Saban...

5 stars -0
4 stars - 3
3 stars -4
2 stars -2

I would be amazed if Dooley could pull the same class Saban had in his first full year but realistically I think that if we can get 10 or 12 - 4 star guys and 1 or 2 - 5 star guys then fill the rest with 3 stars or maybe a couple of 2 star guys we will have a top 10 class in Dooley's first full year and be able to build a championship caliber team.

I'd be OK with that. I expect a top 15-20 finish in regards to class rank. I don't know if a 3.28* avg. will get us there, but possible. It is no secret that this class is focusing on depth and need positions.

Derek Dooley is not Nick Saban.

I'm skeptical of Dooley because Tennessee needs a great coach to get out of the mess its in right now.

Strictly looking at DD's resume, he's nowhere near great.

However, DD has put a pretty good staff (on paper, jury's still out on how well they work together) in place.

DD has really shown a lot during the bar fight.

But for all the *****ing about his recruiting, his record at La Tech etc, it's all irrelevant if he doesn't win games at Tennessee.

Kiffin's record was what before he came here? The only reason he got good recurits was because of his daddy! His daddy couldn't stop ole miss nor VT. How can you put so much confidence in lame and question CDD? Lame will be fired within two to three years because his daddy won't be around to baby sit his son and he will break so many rules USC will never see a bowl game!! He is an immature drunk! Thank you very much and you are welcome for this humble but accurate opinion.

good points, Groves. could you give an in depth explanation of the highlighted line?

However many higher-rated recruits UT signs, I primarily want players that will be contributing to wins 3 and 4 seasons after signing.

On paper, the 2007 class was great - five 5*s and 10 4*s (excluded Sykes). Of those, three were JCs.

Of the remaining 12, 5 were in the two-deep rotation at some point last year. After Berry's departure, 3 will suit up for UT this Fall.

Unfortunately, this seems to have been a trend through much of the last decade. UT has already lost 3 of the 10 5*/4* enrollees from the 2009 class. Until there is more retention, the road will ahead will remain difficult.

Wake me up when we sign the 10 4*s .. Not a negavol at all but we're gonna need a few bump up in rankings from some guys to get to 10 4's.

4stars- 10
3stars- 12
2stars- 3

3.28 star avg.

and what number would like for the Vols class to be ranked?

just wanna see where the boards expectations really are.

TIA

I want to see a number one class.... I would not be satisfied with anything less, just as I want to win every game and am not satisfied with anything less ....

I am realistic enough to know that we will probably not achieve either one anytime soon, but I believe it all that we should ever stive for. ....

I am confused why, when Kif was our coach, and going after 4 and 5 stars, that we all thought it was great, but now that we are signing 3 star's .. I keep reading that star's just don't matter. (I am not say you LV are the one doing that) but I am begining to believe that many on this board are confused about what they want. I don't know which works best, and time will tell,,,,

I wish Dooley the best and he may be just what we need..... but as for now No ringing endorsement yet

The 5*'s and 4*'s are mostly skill positions. RB's, WR's, QB's, etc. If we had a class with several high 3*'s DL & OL, I would be happy, mixed in with a few 4*'s & a couple of 5*'s.

Yes. I'd like to see them ranked first...but if not...I'm on board.

You see, I am a UT Volunteers fan. That's what we do...support the athletics programs all the time....every year....wins and losses. Bad years, good years, great years.

We support the University in athletics, academics, society...almost all things...but we're probably loudest and most obvious in supporting our athletics teams.

That's what we do. The rest of you can hang. :clapping:
