Would you still want pearl gone if he didn't lie?

Yes you will miss him when he is gone. Because chances are the next guy wont be close to as successful. But I guess there are the fans who get "embarrassed" because their coach told a lie, OH MY. But I guess their are the fans who would rather like the coach personally than win at a high level.

See, some of us actually care about the actual university and its reputation. I guess as long as there's a parking lot and a building open for you to take a piss in, you're good.

Simply not true. Lofton hit 48.6% from the field and 46.5% of threes as a freshman while average 13 pts a game; he hit 46.6% from the field and 43.7% on threes as a sophomore while averaging 17 pts a game. A monkey as coach would have gotten the same results.

So shooting the ball is the only component of a basketball player. His overall game developed. I am not advocating Pearl sticking around. I am saying he's much better at developing players than some of you experts think.

I need you and a few others to PM me your real names so I can check the annals for your accomplishments as a game coach. Lots of people understand the game as well as the coaches. It's making it happen when you are down there on the floor that makes it much more difficult.

Exactly, I'm not overly concerned about the reputation of public university. I have enough intelligence to know that there isn't a dimes worth of difference between any of them. But of I was, I would understand that having a terrible basketball program is much worse for your university's reputation than having a coach who told a lie.

The first two years he was here the nat. Champion came from the sec. Hardly so how this says if he is a good or bad coach.

This year the league sucks and he's .500.

It's not a good thread until this post is made in some variety.

The problem with arguing with the guys who've bought completely into the cult of personality surrounding Pearl is that you end up sounding a lot more negative than you really are, because a lot of them really seem to think that he's Tennessee's one and only basketball messiah. He is a good coach, not great; he is not irreplaceable. After his first year or two at Tennessee, I thought that maybe we'd hired an elite coach, but after watching him for a few more years I realized that he has too many obvious weaknesses and that unfortunately his ceiling was a lot lower than I'd hoped. Still a good coach, but just not a great one. The WHO YA GONNA GIT? crowd thinks it's either Pearl or Buzz Peterson; they don't seem to realize that there are 350 Division 1 coaches in the country and every one of them likes money.

That OSU team played four guards; their tallest player was 6-6. We had an enormous size advantage but made no effort to exploit it because we had no ability to run a half-court offense. We attempted over 30 threes despite being the worst shooting team in the tournament; Chism himself shot nine. No great (or even really good) coach lets that game play out like that.

Solid post and reasoning. I've been in support of BP, which doesn't mean I think he's the messiah by any stretch, and had my reasons doused on here by Kim jong il types that think any opinion other than theirs is moronic. I'm for whatever happens. If he stays, he's got to step up, as I see many inadequacies in his coaching and evaluation, though shooters tend to help make coaches look like geniuses or asses. If he goes, I understand and I'll support the next coach and move on. Last, I saw something on espn about the Heat and lack of ability to score on the last possession. They were launching unneeded 3's as well and they have top 50 all time talent on the team. It happens.

Ok, maybe he deserves to be fired because he put the program in a bad spot. But that's bot the question to me. The question is Should he be fired. In other words, "Are we better of with him in the future, or someone else?"

Someone else. He's totally compromised what flimsy credibility he might have had. If he staid, I don't think we'd see the same Pearl as we've known and many loved. I think he's done here.

Anyways, I don't think he's a GREAT coach. I think he has some great coaching qualities and has been a great promoter of the program, but overall I think he's a merely a good coach at best.

I don't see any point in keeping around a 'good' coach with NCAA baggage.

Because he is better than the likely replacement.?

Congrats...this year you got both.

well that's just not true. And the rep of UT has quite a bit to do with many people's view of the situation
Are you insinuating that Lon Kruger and Jay Wright aren't ethically equivalent to Scott Drew and Travis Ford? That's crazy talk.

That's a strawman argument that was used by the Fulmerites as an excuse to keep an overpaid useless excuse of a HC around to drive a sinking program straight into the ground.

Look at the team that Pearl will field next year. The NCAA run will end next year.

Well he responded to my point, which was that their isn't a dime's bit of difference between one public university and the next.

Yeah, typical. You "win at all costs" nimrods should stick to pro sports. They don't have to worry about annoying, irrelevant things like academics and integrity over there.

I hope you aren't looking for integrity at a public university, because it doesn't exist. It doesn't exist in the NCAA either.

How did I know SaintBruce/VolBurgers would be back spewing his idiocy under a new name when the hour started growing near for his hero?

If he is fired he will meet & beat a Vol team in the future. Book it, 'cause he'll be snatched up by a good program who wants a winner. Meanwhile, the haters here will no doubt bring back "buzzball" or something worse.

By all accounts the Heat have unparalleled talent but a glaring lack of coaching. Which is my point.
