Yahoo! Sports: Saban to Texas (Rumor)

bamawriter recently implied that Saban wouldn't want the Texas gig in part to the Longhorn network. Just throwing that back in here for the minutes.

It's coming out now that Mack is saying he wont resign. So if Texas wants a new coach, they will have to fire him. That being said, you dont quit a job unless you have one lined up, Likewise you dont fire a coach unless you :think you: have one lined up.

If Texas fires Mack, they have a good feeling they will land a coach they want. But if not Saban, then who? Who else would they be looking at? Who else is worth firing Mack, over?

We will see if Mack indeed gets fired. I somehow doubt Texas makes a coaching change this year, not enough available talent to justify.

Brown has a surprisingly small buy-out. I don't think Texas wants to fire him (they'd rather it be as amicable as possible), but they have no real reason not to do it.

I think the requirements on his time would bug the crap out of him. But if an ownership stake is actually on the table, I'm sure he can learn to live with it.

?? Coming out where? From him? Yes, he has been denying that he's stepping down. That's nothing new

Also, seldom do coaching changes happen with someone waiting in the wings. There's almost always a search.

That is my point, the reports say he is going to resign. HE is saying he wont resign. So until he gets fired, or reports come out saying sources are saying he will be fired, it makes no sense.

Why believe a "source" that says he is set to resign, while he is saying he wont resign?

The resigning part is relatively easy. "Hey Mack, we are gonna move on without you regardless of how it happens. We can fire you and give you your $2.5 million, or you can resign for $3 million and still be a part of Texas football."

The only reason I can think to do it, would be to get Saban. I dont think they will fire Mack and then start a search. I think this is a Saban or Mack stays type deal. For this year at least.

Umm, coach speak? And it's not just now coming out. All he said is that he hasn't "decided" to step down..... yet. His lawyer said that his future is up to him.

Certainly doesn't put any speculation to bed.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Bama go into a tailspin, but I don't believe Saban is leaving. (I would love to be wrong though!)

I would love for Saban to leave Alabama and head to Texas, and then Alabama hire Kirby Smart or Muschamp etc. so they could meltdown like they did when they hired Dubose, Price, Shula, etc. etc......

And he would make them fire him. Mack has said repeatedly that he isnt going to step down. 500k wont change that.

People seem to be taking my posts as saying this whole thing isnt going to happen. Simply put, that is not what I am saying.

All I am saying is...........

I think Mack will make Texas fire him. IF that is the case, I think they would only fire Mack if they thought (or knew) they were going to get Saban. I think they are looking to replace Mack with Saban, not replace Mack in general.

hope this clears things up and gets some of you off my rear end. :hi:

The money won't but common sense will. You are going out either way. Would you not rather have the books say you resigned so you can have a better future? Once he realizes there is no saving his job he will lose his fight.

It would be amazing for our team. The break we've been needing

Texas A.D. " Hey, Jimmy Sexton, ask Nick if he is interested in being the new head coach of the other U.T."

Sexton. "Mack is still the coach"

Texas A.D. "Yeah, I know, but if Nick is interested, then we will fire Mack or encourage Mack to re sign" If Nick is not interested in the job, then we will keep Mack for another season"

Some people on shaggybevo are saying that the reason Mack is fighting with them about the resignation is that he's pissed that it's Saban who is replacing them. One of their "insiders" said Mack is still butthurt over the '09 BCSNCG and he thought he would've beaten Saban had Colt McCoy not gone down with injury

I think Saban would have to be their #1 target. But to suggest that it's "Saban or Mack stays" is incredibly short-sighted. The Texas fanbase, along with many of the powerbrokers, are ready to see Mack go. While they might want Saban, I think there are several coaches out there that they would prefer over Brown at this point.

Well that's pretty stupid. Saban and Brown have a friendly relationship from everything I've heard.

Not sure if you are trying to argue, but that is the same point I am trying to make. Except I think it would involve more that "interest" on Nick's side.

Smart move on the AD, fire honorable mention BIG 12 coach of the year because the fans want it. The dude turned his year around, I dont see them firing him just to take a look around. Like I already said, there isnt enough available talent out there to warrant firing Mack. It may be short-sighted, but I truly think it is Saban or nothing...for this year. Who else do you suggest Texas would look at? And you cant say Strong, we all know he isnt a Texas hire.

@ESPN_Colin: Was told by a great source (hopefully most are) Saban is still deciding at this hour. Weighing both sides carefully.

Colin Cowherd's twitter

Seems like the most likely scenario. "Weighing both sides" is probably more like "milking both sides for their best offer." I laugh the most at the "sources" saying it's not about the money. If that were the case, Bama wouldn't have offered 7million and who knows what Texas is offering? It's mostly about the money and who can blame him?

What would you consider a Texas hire? While Brown did very well at UNC, do any of the hires before him strike you as incredibly impressive?

I think they are in a position currently to do so. If Texas looks at* Strong, or someone of that caliber, I think it would be a huge mistake.

I think a Saban-or-bust mentality is incredibly naive. Look, they might or might not get Saban (I doubt it). But that doesn't mean that keeping Mack Brown around, who has done nothing but be slightly above average since losing the NCG in '09, is the right call if Saban doesn't come.

Agreed. You can't float out the best coach in college football's name and end up with Strong, Franklin, or someone to that degree. Not saying they bad coaches, because they're not, saying this will be a splash hire.
