Who, within reason, would be an upgrade over Mack other than Saban? Don't see them pushing Mack aside unless they're confident they'll get a clear upgrade.
Strong proved this year he's not elite HC material (yet at least). Glad we dodged that bullet.
I think Saban would have to be their #1 target. But to suggest that it's "Saban or Mack stays" is incredibly short-sighted. The Texas fanbase, along with many of the powerbrokers, are ready to see Mack go. While they might want Saban, I think there are several coaches out there that they would prefer over Brown at this point.
I think a Saban-or-bust mentality is incredibly naive. Look, they might or might not get Saban (I doubt it). But that doesn't mean that keeping Mack Brown around, who has done nothing but be slightly above average since losing the NCG in '09, is the right call if Saban doesn't come.
Naive it may be, But I dont seem them getting rid of Mack to pick up a "proven" coach that plays a light schedule. I think they are only after big names, I think they are only after Saban. I am naive.
Ummm, went 11-1 and the only loss came to a team that ended up also 11-1 and ranked #15.
Pulled a struggling UL team up to being competitive, so I'm not sure how much more "elite" you need him to be.
I agree they will want a big name. However, that's kind of subjective to an extent. But don't tell Texas fans that. They think the Longhorn symbol and a big bag of cash will get any coach in the nation to come running (which a lot would). And if that fails, an NFL head coach won't turn down the opportunity to coach at Texas, at least according to them.
But if a big name is what they are seeking, chances are the announcement will come in January since most of the "big" names in the collegiate arena are playing in bowl games. There are a few that would leave their teams high and dry before a bowl game, but not many.
Exactly what I'm thinking as well. I mean Alabama has won back to back National Titles and is currently 11-1 with a spot in the Sugar Bowl. Every other school in the country would give their left nut to have that kind of success. How did the redneck Bama fans respond? By going ape**** and sending death threats to players. I can just imagine their response if, god forbid, they don't win 10 games or make the playoffs.
Didn't Tennesee fans think that U.T., the S.E.C. and a big bag of cash would get us any coach we wanted?
Gruden, Butch Davis, Lovie Smith, Muschamp, Art Bryles, Gary Patterson, Peterson, etc. etc. all said "No"

The problem is UT is not a big job compared to Texas
Texas is rated by many, as the #1 job in the country
..and what was Louisville's strength of schedule this year? Not exactly elite-level coaching when you can't run the table when it's full of nobodies.
I'll admit my comments are Strong were a little, well, too strong. I base my opinion on the fact that Louisville had the clearest path to a BCS game coming off a big win last year with a relatively light schedule this year and underwhelming down the stretch but wins are wins. That's not the main point. Is he an upgrade over Mack brown? I don't see his resume suggesting that. Other than Saban, who is a clear upgrade?
