Isn't that what he said 5 years ago? Guess he will retire in 2035

The first time he wanted to cut back and retire was to work with his son Matt and help him with his racing career. Matt decided he didn't want to race so Mark decided to continue running.

Him flip flopping on his decision led me to start following Carl. Glad he did.

Has Edwards signed with Gibbs? Speculation about #99-Carl Edwards raged through in the NASCAR garage throughout the weekend, with unconfirmed reports that the stock car racing star - now back atop the Sprint Cup standings after Sunday's New Hampshire 301 - could definitely be heading to the Joe Gibbs Toyota operation next season and leaving Jack Roush's Ford operation. No one would say much at all on the record about the Edwards situation. However, it appears something is changing, or has changed. Just what, if anything, isn't clear. And yet still there was little more than more silence Sunday. No one involved was leaping into deny or confirm anything. Part of the speculation involves sponsorship possibilities. Edwards is considered one of the sport's most attractive drivers from a sponsor's viewpoint. And it is believed that part of the driving factor in the Edwards-Gibbs possibility could be Home Depot, the home improvement giant which has 'lost' five straight NASCAR championships to arch-rival Lowe's and #48-Jimmie Johnson.(MikeMulhern.net)(7-18-2011)

It seems likely. I wonder if Gibbs will move Logano to a 4th car or allow him to look for a ride elsewhere if this happens.

Gibbs will put Logano in a 4th car next year IMO. He hotshotted him to Cup too soon and he'll at least give him one more year to prove his worth. If he doesn't work out there will be other good drivers he could tap for that 4th car.

I'm not sure JGR has enough room for Edwards. I hope it doesn't it happen, but I think RCR may have an equally strong shot at landing him.

I really think Carl is heading to Gibbs. And most people saying that he has the points lead and solid sponsors so why should he go are so off base and don't even realize it.

Let's examine what we do know:

Roush, from past experiences, are hit or misses during the season. They happened to get the new Ford engines working well this year and have been up front. The two years prior they were so far out in left field it was unbelievable. The Roush yo-yo syndrome has to be in Carl's mind.

Most importantly, and what is being overlooked by SO MANY, is the fact that the other Roush cars are all potentially looking for sponsors. Yeah it's great and all if Edwards has Subway, Aflac, Scott's, etc. but the other drivers need sponsorship too. Kenseth has nothing locked up for next year and rumors persist that UPS may fly the coop. So what you may ask? How does this effect Carl? Well, let's say Kenseth and Ragan both run 15-20 races each with little to no sponsorship. Roush's source of income is cut and he has to dig into his pockets to fit the enormous bills that running for championships cost. So maybe some of the Aflac, Subway, and Scott's money has to be utilized to keep the other teams on the track. And let's also not forget that Carl's contract won't be cheap - he'll wind up with one of the top 5 paying contracts in the sport more than likely.

I think Carl leaves because Gibbs can promise stability with the Home Depot sponsorship, stability for Carl in knowing that those cars are some of the strongest in the field each and every year, and also knowing that Denny with Fedex and Kyle with M&M's and his other sponsors are locked in there. No worrying about his teammates losing sponsors and wondering where those sponsor dollars will have to be replaced.

Carl will be in the 20 Home Depot car in 2011. Joey will be in a 4th Gibbs car. If UPS stays Ragan will survive and be at Roush next year. They will bring Stenhouse to Cup to replace Carl and Trevor will still be trying to figure out his place in the organization.

I wouldn't be surprised if UPS leaves Roush that Bowyer takes the General Mills sponsorship over there and runs at Roush next season. Childress seems to be a stronger organization as a whole when they run 3 cars and they may drop back next year if they lose General Mills and Bowyer.

Bowyer stays at RCR, General Mills comes back but not at the current amount of races. If UPS leaves RFR I could see them going to Bowyer to fill out the remaining season.

From speculation I've heard is that, if Carl signs with JGR Joey is out at JGR. He should be able to find a ride some where though.

If Carl leaves I'd love to see Mark Martin wind up back at RFR. If he really wants to run part time he can split time with Ricky Stenhouse Jr next year. I wonder what will happen with David Ragan though. RFR is really in some trouble though with 3/4 of there cars needing sponsors and trying to re-sign Edwards which won't be cheap either.

I want Edwards to stay with Roush, but that is for my own selfish reasoning that I am a Ford man. I started following Mark Martin solely because he drove a Ford but then started pulling for the driver, not the car, before the move to Chevy. When I thought he was going to retire, I became a fan of Edwards to stick with Roush/Ford, but I liked him as a driver too. I will continue to follow Carl if he goes elsewhere.

Wouldn't that be something?! I would be all for that scenario!

I would, still Kasey is talented in his own right.

He may have locked Kasey up too soon. Sadly, Dale Jr. is the one that needs to go but they have that special bond having lost their father/son and Jr. rakes in a lot of money so he isn't going anywhere.

I do like Kasey with Kenny Francis more than Kasey with Lance Mcgrew so he should do well in the 5 car.

McGrew couldn't crew chief a soap box derby car to much success.

Yeah, with Kahne and Francis coming in next season I doubt Hendrick will move him from Martin with just half a season left. Looks like Mark is stuck with him.

I talked to one of my good friends tonight. His son is the front tire carrier for Carl Edwards nationwide car. He said his son told him that this was a weird week/weekend. Nobody said for sure, but the word amongst the team was that Edwards was leaning towards leaving. Nothing we haven't already heard. Just thought I wold throw it out there.

Interesting, I wonder if Carl saying he won't run Nationwide full time in 2012 is another hint at his future?
