A Racist Take On Our New Coach

Perhaps I should rephrase that. To say that he will be the darling of black athletes and single parents everywhere just because he is black and grew up the way he did is erroneous and unfair to claim. You did not state that explicitly, THANKS, THAT'S CORRECT

but you did implicitly get that point across, NO I DIDN'T

and I can bet the house that that is how many who replied to this thread perceived it as well. I CAN'T HELP PEOPLE'S PERCEPTION, ESPECIALLY MORONS.

We all agree that racism exists in this world, and in this country. But here is my point: should it? NO
Should race determine who gets a job and who doesn't? NO
Should race determine where a college student goes to school? NO, BUT IT DOES AT MICHIGAN LAW
Should race determine who marries who? NO
Should race determine who we interact with? NO
It seems foolish to think that it should. YES It's the same thing with Coach Zo and his recruiting methods. WHAT METHODS?
Yes, we have a black coach. CORRECT
But I do not believe that Zo came here with the intent of correlating his race and upbringing and using it to just reel in recruits like there was no tomorrow. CORRECT, NO ONE HAS IMPLIED THAT
He wanted to sell who he is, THAT'S MY POINT. WHO HE IS.
his philosophy, INFLUENCED BY HIS LIFE'S EXPERIENCE
the program, NOT A HUGE SELLING POINT AT THE MOMENT
and the school, OBVIOUSLY
as well as their collective goals for each year that they are at UT. GET TO NBA (even though that's not realistic in most cases)
That is my point.

You can take my words and do whatever you want with them, but I have stated my opinion, and I have tried incessantly to get my point across to you and anyone else who happens to read this. All I can say to you, sir, is good luck.

Your inventing my words but claim I'm doing what with yours exactly?

I get your point, you're an idealist that does not want race to matter.
I'm a realist and realize that it does.

Thanks for the well wishes but I think luck is for losers.

Maybe I am an idealist. I have no qualms about it. Think about it: if you were black, would you want people judging you because of the color of your skin? Would you want people telling you that you can't do something because of the preconcieved notion that race matters? Or that because you are black that you have certain interests and tastes?

That would be like saying that the only foods that you eat are ribs, fried chicken, mac 'n' cheese, collard greens, and sweet potato pie, and that you wash it down with a tall glass of Kool-Aid. Why? Because you're black.

That would be like saying that just because you're black, you listen to rap, R&B, and hip-hop music.

That would be like saying that because you're black, you play basketball.

Or people thinking that because you're black, you must live in the projects.

Or because you're black, you must drive a 1970s Cadillac with big wheels with expensive rims on them.

Or because you're black, you must have three children with different women.

Such misconceptions are insulting and misguided. So, you can go on saying that race matters, but understand that it is foolish to think that it should.

Another ignorant post. Hard to believe there's enough black basketball players that white coaches get to sign some also.

Cheatapari, and Calhoun are known pay-for-play recruiters. Coach K actually has an above average number of white players for a non Mormon school. Tubby doesn't recruit period.

You call that ignorant and you are going to argue cheating from some of the best in the business??????? Talk about ignorant.....good grief.

Those guys get them because they are at the top of their profession. Calipari being at Kentucky makes him an even better recruiter (as if that were possible). Calhoun isn't at a program quite like Kentucky but it is elite. That babble about K makes no sense. Tubby recruited but wasn't special because he was black. You left out Self.

Come to the fight with some ammo. The truth is, your argument is wrong. It's been proven time and again. There are examples all over the country of the opposite with respect to great success.

Sometimes people just don't want to hear the truth.

Wow! You have been drinking stupid for a long time! That has to be sarcasm. Please tell me that my sarcasm meter is broken.
Cheatapari has vacated 2 Final 4s because he's at the top of his profession? Calhoun just got busted for major sanctions because he's at the top of his profession? Tubby Smith is a great recruiter? Evidence please. Minnesota would like to have it.

You've backed yourself into a corner and can't get out. Stating every stereotype you can think of helping you?

I'm still waiting for that post to black athletes and black members of VN that say it can be a factor. Are they racists?

Jason Swain says it matters.

I would like for you to explain why you have just called me a racist. I believe it is undeserved and against board rules.

I wouldn't worry about him, he said all black churches only care about the color green earlier in the threads now that is racist for real.

I hate to enter this discussion, but I think my opinion falls somewhere in the middle.

Sure, a black coach is not going to bring in elite talent simply because he's black. No question there.

However, black student athletes, particularly those that had a rough upbringing, are most certainly going to identify with Martin, having gone through similar ordeals. It's the same as if I were a Canadian, and worked with a fellow Canadian (I'm not, thank god :) j/k). I would relate better with this person by default. Or, if I were a retired rodeo clown, I would relate to other rodeo clowns.

It's not racist.

Also, I was kidding when I posted many pages back calling the OP racist.

Jayson Swain said it can be a factor. You're calling him either ignorant or a liar. I would tend to think that when someone makes a statement about their race (culture) and someone of a different race (culture) tells then that they are wrong, that's racist and well deserved.

I'm not worried about him. He has an idea in his head that no amount of discussion or evidence is going to remove.

Calling anybody who disagrees with him a racist is over the line, though.

It isn't Swain that I think is ignorant or lying. The guy signed to play for a white coach and did so for four years; I think that says more about his factors than whatever statement you say he made.

I do think believing that he speaks for the entirety of black athletes says something about you, though.

Come off of it. I don't know who on here is black and who is white unless they have pictures to prove it.

I think what I said about stereotypes has a great deal of relevance to what we're talking about here. Saying that Zo's race and his upbringing will bring in recruits and then forming a baseless correlation between single parents, rough neighborhoods and black kids is just as wrong as each of the aforementioned stereotypes. I think it is you who has backed himself into a corner by even starting this thread.

I'm disagreeing with you. I don't know what color, or how athletic, you are. I picture you as slightly pink but not terribly quick.

His lead recruiter and position coach was black. Nice try.

No one said he speaks for all blacks. But if you're stating otherwise you're calling him either a liar or ignorant, no way around that.
