Andrew Gribble reporting Pearl committed violations in Sept and March

Certainly a terminable offense... but still not a NCAA violation.

Maybe that was one of the "non-NCAA" issues and there's still another actual violation out there.

If he was really out recruiting off campus this month then they need to fire him all over again tomorrow. They need to fire him so hard he bounces.

Hubbs on the March Violation.

The biggest news from Tennessee's official statement regarding the ouster of Bruce Pearl was that an additional NCAA violations that occurred as late as this month. Obviously, there was the bump rule violation in September and Volquest.com has learned that another violation, likely the one referred to in the statement, which occurred in March was an extra benefit to a player or a player's family member because they were given extra game tickets.

If that's it, then there was no reason at all to mention it in today's statement. They had more than enough reason to fire him already. Just oust him and have done--no need to kick him in the balls on the way out over something as minor as that.

It sound disturbingly like they're piling on just to justify their actions to the fans.

But there's no reason for that--actions were already justified, and fans would see that eventually.

Holy hell, but our PR department must be nonexistent.

Mike Strange thinks that something might have happened when recruits came to the Kentucky game.

I wonder if they violated the "game day" rule, where they did game day like activities for the recruits?

Oh No!!! not shirtless doing the Wildboys Chant i hope.

It would have come out sooner or later. Might as well get it into the news cycle and let the guy put it behind him til June.

Of course it would have. But the violation itself wasn't a big deal, and they worded it like it was. They've got every fan and media person scrambling to find out what this nasty violation was.

It's a cheap shot. They're trying to justify his termination by saying, "Oh by the way, he had a violation THIS MONTH!!!!"

It's a BS thing to do. Just fire him, for godssakes, and let him go out with half a shred of dignity.

Well, like with everything else, he brought it on himself. If it were me though, I would rather you pile it on for a week than have to deal with it over and over for 3 months.

It just said he committed a violation, which was true. It's another sign that he just simply can't follow the rules. I don't feel too sorry for him considering he's going to receive his salary till the end of June and then $50k per month for a year following.

For real. Dude is getting paid, he can live with a little annoyance.

He has to deal with June hearing no matter what; for the rest, he doesn't have to deal with a thing, except his own regrets.

People kept citing "respect" today, regarding the timing of the announcement. This was a disrespectful way to show the guy the door.

Not to mention, it makes the university look TERRIBLE in the national spotlight (again)...and the rest of the country won't take the trouble of hunting down what that last violation was, like UT fans will.

I think PR mistake. Again.

Mike Hamilton now has thousands of UT fans shrieking for his head and hanging him in effigy because the basketball coach he worked so hard to save is a recidivist fsckup. Why should he care about Pearl's dignity at this point?

Ehh... I think it works out well for both parties. No reason to sit on information like that, especially when a good portion of the fanbase is getting whipped into a trailer park frenzy.

I don't feel sorry for him. If anything, I feel much more sorry for his staff--they're not in his shoes, financially, and instead of a cool million and probably broadcast job, they get 4 months and are unemployable.

No, I don't feel sorry for Pearl. I just don't like feeling like someone is trying to jerk me around. That comment by the AD feels like someone is playing games with me and jerking me around.

Pisses me off.

I understand what you're saying. It just doesn't bother me as bad, I guess.

OK, maybe best for both. I dunno, I can't speak for them.

I think the main thing that chaps me is I feel the way it was disclosed deceived ME.

I don't like being toyed with.

Unemployable may be taking it a bit far. CBP will be the only one hit with a show cause, the rest should be able to find something somewhere.

Probably true. But the NCAA won't rule until several months from now, so no school can take a chance on those guys this year. It will be NEXT spring before the assistants are in a place to have someone take a chance on them.

No need to take it personally. All Hamilton's statement is is boilerplate PR-speak. If you translate it into English, all it says is "We were planning to keep him. There's been some other stuff since then that has forced us to change our mind." It's intentionally vague and therefore sinister because all the lawyering around it forces it to be devoid of actual content.

Besides, you still don't know what the "non-NCAA" issues were. Zasnow usually has good information. How do you feel about it if Pearl violated the self-imposed ban on recruiting?

They have mortgages and car payments that they committed to based on an SEC salary. They won't have anything paying close to that this year.
