Bad Beats, Monster laydowns...Poker discussion

So I'm at the Hard Rock Thursday night at a 1/3 table. I'm in the BB with about $200 in front of me.

Super tight lady makes it $20, she has about $150 left. One caller, he has the same. I look down to 4-5, off. Knowing she has a big pair and that this kind of hand can stack her, I call the extra $17.

Flop is 4-5-7, with two spades (I don't have a spade).

I check. Lady bets $35. Woot woot woot! My read is confirmed, and I am prepared to ship it.

But wait, what's this? The guy in the middle pops it to $105?

After a minute, I fold. The lady goes all in, he calls.

She has KK, he has 77.

I am a freakin' genius !!

(P.S., left broke three hours later).

For those of you within driving distance of Cherokee, NC, the EBCI and the Governor's Office have reached an agreement that will bring live table games/dealers to Harrah's Cherokee Casino. It still has to go through the General Assembly and then the Department of Interior has to sign off on it, but live tables should be up and running in the not too distant future.

Well the 2nd Annual HWCC poker tournamnet starts tonight...
There's 17 of us for the first tournament. We'll have 6 of them and the winner of the fianl table will be sponsored to the WSOP in July of 2012...

Aw shucks... I'm closer to Tunica now than I am Cherokee.

Finished 5th out of 17 tonight..so I got points toward the final table.,,but the cash table hurt me..

exact opposite tonight from last month....went out early in the neighbor poker tournament but won $350 in the cash game

On the button, blinds are 100-200, UTG calls the 200, folds around to me, I assume UTG is just calling with nothing and I raise to 600 with JC 3C. fold, fold, UTG calls. flop 2C-5C-4S, I bet 600, call, turn 4C, I'm all-in, he calls, flips over 2-4o. WTF?!?!?! 2-4o???? No AC, no 6C on the river, I'm out. Sonofa......

Played last weekend in a $2-$5 game. I have about $1200 or so in front of me, villain has me covered by $600. He's been running everyone over, including me, for awhile.

I am in BB with QQ and it straddled in front of me. Villain and one other player call the straddle and when it gets to me I make it $50 to go. Villain calls.

Flop is 9-9-7. Villain checks, I bet $100, he calls.

Turn is a beautiful Q. I bet $100, he calls.

River is a 7. I bet $200. He raises to $450, I shove, and he calls with the 9.

Ship the $2400 pot please !!

Since there isn't really a general poker discussion thread that I can see, I'll ask here.

I'm going to Vegas for the first time this week for work. I've only played poker online and poker night with the guys. I've been to a casino twice, but no poker tables. Is there any poker table etiquette I should know? Do I just sit down with my chips and the dealer will deal me in?

I'll probably just creep around a poker table for a bit and observe for a second to get my bearings. I just don't want to be made a fool of.

Also, I'm a bit scared of no limit for my first time in Vegas. Are there going to be any pot limit tables? How low do the tables go in a big casino? Will they have any $0.50/$1 tables or anything in that range?

I'm a bit of a puss, and I'm nervous.

Do they bring you free drinks at Vegas casinos if you're playing? The last casino I was in did, but I don't want to assume that's the case in all casinos.

Also, what is your general tipping practice for dealers?

Yes! I do think that is the norm in most. Just remember to tip.

yea, $1 is the standard, probably. that's what I do.

dealers, I usually tip a $5 after good hands.

I love Omaha hi/lo, but it's a $3/$6 table at my hotel, and I'm really looking to stay as low as I can.

Does anybody know how low the limit tables are at a popular casino on the main strip?

May try a sit-n-go tourney.

I'm excited to play in a casino setting, but I'm afraid with tipping and a rake, I'll lose all my money fast.

I'm no expert at poker. We play every other Friday at my buddy's house. Last week, I went out on a disappointing hand. I had J-9 and on the flop it was 99X. Turn was a J and I was last to bet with two others still in. Everyone checked to me, so I went all in (it was getting late). Someone else had JJ and slow played my ass. :)

First, don't be. There are plenty of tourists and/or inexperienced live players sitting down.

My advice:

1) If the etiquette issue worries you, play some $1/$2 limit. Should be easy to find at any of the mid tier places, like MGM or Wynn. Midweek I think you can find that at Venetian even. Play an hour, you will see most everything you need to see to feel okay with it.

2) Do not play above$1/$2 no limit where a buy in might be $100 to $200. They will crush you quickly at $1/$3 no limit (popular at Aria) and you will last 30 seconds at Bellagio or Venetian $2/$5 no limit.

You can have plenty of fun playing $1/$2 no limit at Bellagio, which is one of the great and famous rooms, of course.

(As to chips, you can either buy from cage directly or sit at table with cash and dealer or brush (like a waiter, basically) will either give you chips right there or go get them for you.

When you win a pot of any size, tipping is commendable to dealer. At $1/2 no limit, I basically tip $1 for any pot I drag up to about $40, $2 up to $100, and $3 over that. If its particularly big or you get saved by a miracle river card, a $5 chip is in order. And if the dealer is a hot chick, tip more because... well, because.

Sit and go's are tough to find because they aren't scheduled and you have to have 6-10 people willing to do it at the exact same moment.

I would agree with Lawgator on everything. You're going to be nervous, but after 20-30 minutes, you'll be fine. You'll see how things work and who cares if you do something wrong? They will help you out and let you know. It's not a big deal.

I'd also add you can pretty much find tournaments round the clock out there between all the hotels. Look up a tournament schedule online and pick out something your comfy with. I'd suggest a standard freeze out with no rebuys for a rookie.

Most of all, have fun. Enjoy playing at the casinos. You'll see crazy stuff just like online, so don't get discouraged if you hit some bad luck.

I really miss have a friendly little cash game around. The last time I lived in Knoxville, there was a group of 6 of us that played pretty much every week with a $20 buy in.

I do not have that kind of friend network here (nor the time to cultivate one).

I'm lucky it is legal here in Florida at the tracks and some Indian casinos.

Last night played at Daytona Beach and played in an $80 knockout tournament. $50 went into the prize pool, $15 rake, and $15 every time you knocked someone out.

Can't remember how many played -- I think around 45. I was on about a four hour heater and knocked out enough people to win my buy in back plus a bit, and then chopped three way at the end with me taking lion's share of $630 since I had most chips in play by a bunch.

Then went and played 2/5 and grinded $250 up to $1200 in two hours by snapping off some obvious bluffs by the drunks plus hitting some open enders and a flush or two.

If I could only run like I did last night all the time .....
