Don't get me wrong, Im kind of let down too, but this does not mean the END of Tennessee football. There are some REALLY good names out there for our coach. Unfortunately, this whole Gruden thing has screwed it up for any coach we do get as far as excitement and fan support. Now that i think about it, short of a national name that recruits know, were not even sure Gruden would be a good fit for college ball. Lets get behind someone who HAS college experience. Fisher, Strong, ans some others are good candidates. With experience!
Yeah...if Patterson was named the next HC at UT, I would see that as a home run hire. Even Tressel if we could not get Patterson.
Yes, it would not look good from a PR perspective, but his show cause was really the result of a silly Michigan fanbase instigated witch hunt. I don't know how the NCAA can legally dictate that an athlete cannot sell or trade their own personal belongings. That is a basic legal right, and to act like it's wrong or an infraction is utterly absurd. Seriously...trading a jersey for a tattoo?

Tennessee, according to the NCAA ruling, would simply have notify them that they are willing to apply the 5 game + bowl game penalty (he would have to sit those out) they gave him, and report his progress regarding compliance, twice a year for the next 3yrs (the remainder of his show cause). They already do that anyway, with all the NCAA stuff they dealt with over Kiffin's staff.
His salary would probably be about what Dooley's is now...at least for the initial contract period....but what that would allow us to do, is spend big to hire an all-star staff...even poach some NFL coordinators/assistants if need be. I'm sure one priority would be to hire one of those who could hold the fort down for those 5 games.
It should be noted that he already paid the NCAA's penalty last year after being hired as an assistant by the Colts. He was not obligated to do so outside of the NCAA confines, but he did so voluntarily. So, it's certainly plausible that Hart could ask the NCAA to waive or reduce his penalty, on that basis and the fact that he's 2yrs removed from the "infraction."
3 National Championship appearances (won one of those) in the past 10yrs + several conference championships. What other coach, whom we are even considering, has those credentials? Sure there is a tradeoff, but it's worth it, IMHO, compared to what we get in return.
