Heated exchange between Nick Saban and Paul Finebaum

In my opinion I doubt Saban would have this righteous indignation against the media if it hadn't been a 5-star offensive tackle. If it were a third string bench warmer Saban would have caved and kicked dude off and would have been held up as running a tight ship.

Saban needs his star player and this is damage control, nothing more.

As recently as May 12th, Saban dismissed 5 star OL Charles Baldwin, #2 juco in the country, after only one semester at school. It was for undisclosed violations.

Bama Undisclosed Violation == Not being as good on the field as expected, or not working hard. Drugs, guns, any other sin is forgivable, but not that.

If he didn't know it was stolen, and is forthcoming about where he got it, then what is there to be uncool with?

Ignorance is no excuse in the law. Unless you can find an incompetent patrolman and a district attorney open to having Bama bagmen visit his air conditioned home with gifts.

Ignorance of the law. It has never worked for anyone I know.

Doesn't matter to me though, I didn't want the kids permanently kicked off the team or their lives ruined or anything, but I do believe there should be consequences.
Some lost playing time, doesn't even have to be against us. I don't want to seem biased.

But for players own good, there needs to be consequences other than community service.

What law was or wasn't broken can be debated all day.
But I highly doubt anyone here is stupid enough to believe that they had a stolen gun and a small amount of drugs because they had great intentions.
My children can do something wrong without breaking the law, but I still know they're doing wrong and they still receive punishment for it.
Saban isn't the worst ever at this, but in this case, I think he should have done just a touch more.

Come on, man. It wasn't mid-day and he wasn't on his way to the shooting range. Its not some 2nd Amendment case.

Why does he have it? That's the important question.

I'm not saying he should have been removed from the team for having the gun. But to just shrug it off, point out that it was sort of "legal" so there's absolutely nothing wrong is pretty damn irresponsible and a weak message to send to the players.

Gotta disagree with this. It's either legal or not, that's the only important question.

Why he has it is of no significance here

Because he bought it? I'm not understanding how that qualifies as an "important question".

The question is, why did he have it?

So here is the deal, I have never been arrested, if I was to be pulled over under the same circumstances, would that same DA let me walk? I mean, I also have my life ahead of me as well.. Would he? Even though I'm not a future #1 draft pick and playing for Bama..

I'm sure if his child was in the possession of a stolen gun he wouldn't care why they had it either...

Depends, did you spend your adolescence and teenage years working and sweating or in the air conditioning?

I still don't understand what the answer to that question would tell us. He has a right to legally possess a firearm. It's legal for it to be in his car.

How he acquired it matters. Why does not.

I get your point, basically it should not matter why he had it, but the fact that he did have it.. Either way, doesn't matter.. He will not face any charges and hopefully will learn from this.

The obvious lesson applies to all of us, but especially those of us who have millions of NFL dollars waiting on us in the very near future:

If you don't feel safe hanging out in [insert town here] unless you're strapped, then don't hang out in [insert town here].

IMO, Saban missed an opportunity with his team and with the younger generation who looks up to college and pro players and coaches to make a statement that is much greater than Alabama Football!!!!!!!!

He basically said that if you don't get charged it's okay. You can have a stolen gun in your possession. You can have drugs in your possession. You can in effect do anything you want as long as you don't get caught and get charged because .... well ... after all boys will be boys.

Community service is more than likely something members of the team do anyway - well as least that is what I see at UT - I see players who haven't done anything working in the community. I even see this at the high school level in the town I live in. This is NOT punishment that will change a person and make them understand that while their actions may have not resulted with legal implications - it is not acceptable for a person of their stature. You have to take away something that impacts one to really make a difference.

And we have Saban saying this on the same day that we have Zaeivon Dobon's mother asking athletes to use their power to lead the charge for change. SMH

There are two ways to effectively stop situations like the one that happened to Zaeivon.

1. More stringent gun control so that NO one not even the criminals can secure guns.
2. Change the culture of folks that make them understand using a gun, a knife, a bomb, a car .... to kill someone is wrong

If those who are in charge of helping to shape the lives of our youth and young adults are not willing to enact meaningful punishment (even when laws have not been broken), then the only option is to make anything and everything that can be used to harm someone unattainable by everyone.

Take it to the Politics Board.

Take it to the Politics Board.

Most of this topic is political in nature with the discussion of gun possession laws in Louisiana, whether the laws were broken, etc.

Just pointing out the irony of the events of the day.

Personally I applaud Finebaum for pushing Coach Saban on this topic.

You using this to get into a screed on gun control is why you need to take it to the Politics Board. This situation is a terrible example to attempt to highlight your talking points.

I also applauded him for asking the question.
The premise on here that the highest paid coach in college football is above answering a media question is absolutely ridiculous and pathetic.
It is the media's job to ask questions.
The only thing I'm mad at Finebaum for is backing down when he got scolded by Mr. arrogance believing he's not allowed to be questioned.

It's a hell of a bubble these guys live in, there's not a single one of my friends that wouldn't have knocked that little elf on his butt if he talked to him that way.
As an old country song once implied , sometimes an attitude adjustment is needed.

What clip did you watch? Saban answered the question. He explained why he's not suspending the players. You may not have liked his attitude, but he didn't act like he was above being asked.

Alabama and coach Saban have had many opportunities to do the right thing and send future messages to recruits based on each individual circumstances. As will Butch.

Tyren Jones - 4* - dismissed
Tyler Hayes - 4* - dismissed
Eddie Williams - 5* - dismissed
Brent Calloway - 5* - dismissed
DJ Pettway-4*-dismissed (only player back after JUCO)
Charles Baldwin 5* - dismissed

A few off the cuff. And frankly, Kamara 5* was so deep into the pit of Saban's doghouse after the suspension he thought it best to transfer. With that attitude in Tuscaloosa, he was right. Otherwise, he would have been one of those off the cuff as well.

I'm glad he has been very vocal about what he learned from Saban's discipline.

I watched the one where he told the reporter when the conversation was over.
Unlike the ones where someone sits down for an interview and answers follow-up questions also.
Which would basically be every other interview I've seen with a head coach.

He answered Finebaum's 1st question. Finebaum asked a follow-up (essentially the same question), which Saban also answered. Following that answer, he made it clear that he was not going to answer any further questions on the subject. Again, how is that "above answering questions?" Or do you mean that he acted like he was above answering a third version of the same question?
