I am sorry, I want us to get a new offensive coordinator

Hyatt got that open because of how quickly he ran his routes. He was on the db so quick that it forced the corner to declare his coverage and it also sped up Hookers read process. These receivers are not anything like Hyatt. And even saying that, we've had some guys running open. We just have to hit more of them. Particularly on Saturday night in Athens...
I agree with you that Hooker processed the play much quicker than Nico. Nico doesn’t seem to be able to go through his progressions if his primary guy isn’t open he can’t find the secondary receiver.

Hooker 25 year old man, Nico 19. Also Nico is outdoing manning in his first year

Not really bad per se. Just not the high octane ‘22 version with a 6th year QB running the show. As frustrating as it is, Heupel and Co are actually coaching to their strengths. We are playing championship football by allowing our defense to be the centerpiece. Execution is a problem on offense and it does seem vanilla, but give me 8-1 with ‘terrible’ playcalling all day.

Not to say I am taking up for Halzle but many people wanted Tim Banks gone. After this season though either he is likely getting calls for a head coaching job or a significant pay raise here if he wants either because it would take the National Guard to get him out of here besides him leaving of his own free will.

I admit the offensive results are not what we expected especially after those first couple games where we punished weak opponents and had games buried by halftime. Is it Halzle still learning or is he handcuffed by Heupels final say. I will say this Phil Fulmer did not want to say he would fire Dave Clawson because it was hamper his future and while it was impossible to keep Fulmer after that. Dave Clawson proved he was not the issue over the years.

Play calling was fine. We left a lot on the field due to poor execution. Nico by and large played good. Had an overthrow on Bru that was a TD, Sampson fumble would’ve likely ended in a TD as well, Gaston missed seeing the open TE that would’ve been a huge chunk play as well. There was one series I wasn’t a fan of last night but for the most part it was a good game as far as play calling.

It has been an adjustment going from High Octane football to where we are today.
We are playing balanced football with mistakes.
Look at scores with SEC competition and look at NFL Scores.
Both units have equal burdens and are balanced.
It may look ugly but we we seem to have control every game.
TIFWIW.

This play calling is so frustrating and uncreative.
I noticed an interesting trend in the offensive play calling when Nico was in the game and when he was not. When Nico was on, much fewer pass plays were called and the passing plays called were sidelined scrum and a few deep ball s. When was not in the game, especially in the third quarter, almost all the passes where deep and we threw a lot of passes. In the fourth quarter, when we were ahead, we went back to running the ball and sealed the game. We saw pass patterns in the third quarter we had not seen this year and it sy to open up the field for the run. Maybe I am just imagining the change, but that is what I thought.

A lot of that had to do with the msu defense and what they were coming out in with Moore.

The run game is so vanilla. Hand the ball off up the middle. Not utilizing the outside at all to let Sampson utilize speed. Very frustrating to watch.
I’ve not watched any film on UT and often watch the game in a social setting. So, I’m not saying what plays we run or don’t run. However, run up the middle isn’t a play call. We could run the ball between the tackles 10 plays in a row and each be a different play call.

It’s hard to argue with the play calling in the run game when our RB1 is leading the SEC in rushing, holds the University record in TDs and is second in the nation in rushing TDs…. All while giving the ball away 3 games in a row.

Agree and you can see it with this thread itself. Most the first page aligns with OP while the rest is spent bashing it (my OP was probably an overreaction but I think the people bashing it are pretty close minded to our issues as well). Our offense came a live in the second half. Some of that is our depth, good coaching (we do make good adjustments), and Miss State just being bad.

Manning was shared 3rd string QB w/Brandon Stewart his true Freshman year and Nico played 5 games his True freshman year. Manning didn't start until way up in the season after Colquitt hurt & for season & Todd Helton hurt opted for baseball & Manning /Stewart shared QB duties until Peyton finally won the job.
This is Nico 2nd season but he's a RS Freshman a Sophomore academically but Peyton's 2nd season with Vols had .......... PM=2954 yards passing & 22 TDs with only 4 interception. Their both having good 2nd seasons IMO that's the way I look at it.
............NI =1879 passing & 11 TDs with only 4 interception so far 2024, if Nico is on the same trajectory as PM he will leave after 2026 season which would be 3 season plus the abbreviated Freshman season

Good post. To me, the running calls are part of my frustration though. It isn't that we are running the ball, it is that we only think we can run in the middle of the field. I do think it is good to hit the middle more than run outside but some outside run calls would be nice.

Both Casey Clausen and Erik Ainge were thrown in as freshmen to play. Curious to see how they stack up with Nico.

Granted, I think Nico is fine and I don't understand the bashing of him.

OP here, good points. I maybe overreacting so far. I feel like we are just too conservative (especially with Nico in there). More outside runs and quick short throws. Our play book is runs up the middles, screens, and long passes.

Both of them were true Freshman as was Peyton, IMO a lot of difference in being in college a full year and then playing as a academic Sophomore/RS Freshman eligibility wise versus coming out of HS true freshman JMO. If you go back and watch the UT/UCLA game and see Peyton make a cameo appearance he looks like a freshman in HS trotting out there. I felt a little sorry for him and they panned Archie and he looked concerned.

I am fine with Nico. He has really turned it on the last 3 games or so. I think the issue was all the premature hype around him and that wasn't just Tennessee fans, a lot of it was the media.
