Look... we needed Gruden

I don't know that I agree with this. Dooley Had a pretty good D coming in that he made worse. We just lost our top 4 pass catchers. Dooley had 2 sr wrs that had great hands and 2 stud freshmen in Hunter and Rodgers. QB sitiuation is about the same. Jones has to come in adn change the image of a program taht has fallen into mediocracy over the past 5 years. Not saying Jones sitiuation is worse, but it's not better either.

The major difference I see is the junior and senior class.

Besides the couple that you mentioned Dooley didnt have neither. Coach Jones does.

Just when you think your done hearing about Gruden, somebody else brings it up. You could have given him the moon and he still wouldn't have come here. He wants a pro job where he doesn't have to hold somebodies hand and mold them into a winner. I, for one am glad we didn't land him. His overall record shows he can start out with other people's talent and ruin the program.

Also, the band is a perfect example.

If you fire David Lee Roth, do you make Sammy Haggar your absolute priority or do you take a chance on Gary Cherone???????????

In this case, it wouldn't matter what you did because your time has come and gone and no old fart lead singer is going to matter. The era has passed and so has your relevance. The only people thay have fond memories of you have grandchildren.

You better hope that's not a perfect example for Tennessee football

Volnation, I really like Butch Jones. Dooley turned me off almost as soon as he arrived on campus. While the majority of you were praising "Showergate," and "Looking for Rommel" and "pick up the phone and call me" I was telling you that Dooley was auditioning for a TV gig as our head coach. And I didn't like it. And that's exactly what he did.

Butch was always behind the 8-ball. He actually walked into a worse situation than Dooley (which is saying something in a big way). He almost created his next problem. He did what he had to do - he went after elite talent. Problem is, he didn't land the elite talent. I've said for awhile this 2013 class would define his tenure. He swung for the fences (which makes me like him), but he didn't connect. Strike.

Daj is absolutely right - it starts with talent. That's why we needed Gruden so bad, and the CryptKeeper and Booger dropped the ball. I said at the time Hart still had the power to screw the pooch. He did. Ego. BMOC. Hart couldn't handle Gruden being Big Man on Campus. And it will haunt us for a decade.

CBJ still has a chance. He has to lean on our offensive line. He has to restore confidence to the defense. He has to go +2 in the talent column, and that is his record. I fear though he was +2 in the Big East, but the SEC is the best of best. Second tier these days is Steve Spurrier. Let that sink in. Even Muschamp is proving he is worthy of the league. Franklin has the nation talking about Vandy --- VANDY!

Folks, we needed Gruden. It wasn't a pipe dream, but we had to roll out the red carpet, absolutely. The CryptKeeper failed. We've got to hope Coach Butch Jones is +2. I want him to be +2. He's still got a chance, but he's got to take some big scalps 2013.

Dooley was left NFL talent at wr, rb, db and oline. He just couldn't keep them all. CBJ has inherited less talent. He might have more players than DD but they are not as good. Dooley was also left a top ten class basically.

Are Lovie and Gruden on a plane?

If they are, I hope it is not headed to Tennessee. We did not, and do not, need prima donna's. We need coaches who will work their tails off and build a football team, not their own name. We have that in Coach Butch Jones and his staff. I had much rather have what we have now than Gruden and his high opinion of himself.

We will be fine at UT.

Considering the fact that he's not even coaching in the NFL right now, with all of the vacancies this past year, I'm not even convinced he wants an NFL job.

I suspect that the UT rumors were Gruden's way of promoting his brand for the cushy ESPN, endorsement and video game work. Can't blame him for it, except for the meltdown that it created in the fringes of Vol fandom.

It was not necessarily Gruden, who was never coming, but I think we needed a big name hire. Butch Jones was not it, however, I'm not ruling him out. Right now I'm just a little pessimistic for him to bring UT back to a team that is consistently in the top 10.

See above. Suggesting the Grude would not be an elite recruiter at Tennessee is insulting to our institution, IMHO.

You really need to stop.

Rational Philadelphia Eagles fans knew Gruden was a longshot for THEM, for crissakes, and they could have offered wayyy more than a budget-strapped college team coming off of 3 losing seasons. The Eagles couldn't overcome the fact that Gruden's total package of salary and endorsements put him over 10mil/yr, with none of the coaching stress and strain. And Dallas fans will have to come to grips with that next year.

He was never coming here. He wasn't watching USC-UT on the plane, and that isn't a likeness of Jesus in your toast.

Not one of your (usually) strong posts, 99gator.

You missed the humor of connecting David Lee Roth to Phil Fulmer. I'm trying to think of a funnier juxtaposition and its not happening.

Hopefully, we took a chance on Gary Cherone (twice), and we have now landed Sammy Haggar.

But you know full well you and Muschamp would be scurred to see Chucky in Knoxville. Scurred.

Question for OrangeSlice13: That Gruden was never coming here makes sense until you realize that he was in fact assembling a staff with a "college flavor" per Hyams and the guy in Chattanooga. Why, pray tell, would he go to all that trouble if it were never his intention to coach. How do you explain this? Why were the only reporters to get wind of this sure that he was assembling a staff? That makes no sense if he all were doing was playing a couple of mid-level boosters.

If gruden wanted to coach again, and this includes the nfl, he'd have a job.

It's that simple.

Media leaks are easy. That's all i saw in the Gruden thread. Hints, leaks and speculation.

It lines up as well with the idea that Gruden was playing people for exposure as anything.

I absolutely agree. Further, if he would have wanted to coach at UT, UT would have hired him.

Signing JG was an obvious path of least resistance for the AD. There would have been a huge surge in ticket sales and the buzz about UT, both locally and nationally, would have been off the charts. It would have been the absolute ideal rebound for UT following the Dooley era.
