Official 2014 Summer Baseball Thread

Jordan Rogers had a great game going 3 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs and an RBI.

Peter is sure building off of his solid year. Lance might force his way into right field next year.

I wonder what our depth chart will look like.

I've been thinking about that some since Maddox decided to go pro...

Maggio at 1B

Senzel at 2B

Simcox at SS

Rogers at 3B

Stew in LF

VJax in CF although Lance is playing CF for Cinci this summer

Lance in RF

Potential for healthy competition at Catcher with Houser, Schultz, Bramlett and Santiago (can't remember the other guy coming in)...doubt we keep that many catchers though...

With Price, Maddox and Smart gone we need to replace a lot of production at the plate...Rogers, VJax, Maggio and Lance will have to step up and Senzel will have to continue where he left off.

Maybe some one else can weigh in with the new guys coming in and who they may challenge for a spot.

I'm glad he's playing center for Cincy because then he can play anywhere. I think the loser at the catching competition will be our dh if nobody steps up as a pure hitter.
I hope we can hit better next year.

Forrest Bramlett comes off the bench and gets three hits and POG for the Tomcats in a 5-3 win.

Dominick Cammarata is the other catcher coming in.

Brett Langhorne is supposed to be a very good defensive SS, he will compete with Simcox and eventually take over for him when he leaves. I could see a situation where if he hits well enough that he plays second some and senzel plays 3rd. But if Rodgers plays well then you will see the lineup you have or senzel DH again.

Brodie Leftridge is a speedy OF lead off type guy. If he hits well enough I could see him in center and one of the other guys as the DH.

I appreciate the info on the new guys and you are right in regards to hitting.

Some guys I didn't mention were Moberg, Youngblood, Plunkett and Wormsley. Obviously we don't know much about Plunkett as he red shirted, but he's a big kid, 6'4...all these guys could see time if they can hit. I feel like time is running out on a couple of them and a few others. Moberg could contend for 2nd or 3rd, but he's got to be able to get it done at the plate, same with Wormsley at 1B or in the outfield. JYB is a weapon when he gets on, but he has to get on.

The last couple of years the main concern was pitching. This year I think it's going to be the offense that's the biggest question mark.

It hurt losing Thomas, he was the type of guy to come in and play from day one.

We were a few arms short this year, if a couple of these guys can fill those rolls it would really help.

Really need Jackson and Maggio to have good years. If they do and everyone else plays like they can, we will win a lot of games next year.

I agree. Lance went .291 last year in his limited time, if he can stay there, it lessens the loss of Price. Replacing Maddox and Smart, both in the field and at the plate is going to be the trick. Hopefully, Rodgers and Senzel playing together this summer will be beneficial in terms of fielding...I don't see how it can be anything but a plus.

VJax has got to become more consistent at the plate, he's been streaky from the get go...It's going to be really interesting to see how he and a couple of others handle their time in the Cape this summer.

In terms of pitching, I'm really anxious to see the new guys, but I'm not sure I want to count on that. I feel like Serrano and Owenby really need to find "it", whatever "it" is.

Bramlett might make things interesting for us.
Our DH spot is completely up in the air if senzel is going to play second. If somebody can step up at third I.e. Jordan Rodgers, we can use Senzel at DH and use Langhorne at second.

We're going to win games by preventing runs next year. We should keep good defense up the middle.
I'm interested in the competition at catcher and first.

Would love to see Owenby pitch next year like he did last summer. Both him and Serrano have the stuff they just need to trust it and pound the zone. I think Martin will keep getting better, he has a really good change up. If Cox can do what he did last year on Friday night and Lee can close the door. Then the new guys will get to ease in and throw some midweek games.

I'm really excited about next year, I hate losing Maddox and Thomas but there is enough talent to win and get to a regional at the least.

Btw got to love having 6 guys in the cape. Will only help them for next year and when they turn professionally

I think it's huge to have those kinds of numbers in the Cape...best of all...IT STARTS TOMORROW! Whoop!

Lenstrohm (JYB's team mate) is on to pitch for the Bucs... fly out, gives up a single, K, K...

Lenstrohm looks great so far, K'd 4 out of 7 batters he's faced and he is working faster than I've ever seen him...Andy Cox fast, maybe faster...

Lenstrohm goes: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO

JYB goes 0/3, got on FC, stole 2B, got picked trying to steal 3B...never hit a ball out of the infield...

Lehnstrom in dominating!!! I'm excited for him next year. Maybe he could be our closer.

RIVERHEAD 5, SHELTER ISLAND 3
A five-hit, five-run eighth inning was all Riverhead needed to come from behind and hand Shelter Island its first loss at Fiske Field this season.

Forrest Bramlett (Tennessee) led the Tomcats with three hits, including a bases-loaded game-tying single that scored Danny Mendick (UMass-Lowell) in the eighth inning. The Tomcats took the lead and added one more when Hunter Dolshun (UMBC) drew a bases-loaded walk and Colton Rice (Chandler Gilbert CC) followed by reaching on an error.

Jimmy Jack (Loyola Marymount) used one of his two hits in the game to drive in Will Savage (Columbia), who scored two of three Shelter Island runs.

Brenton Arriaga (Loyola Marymount) settled for a no decision after throwing six shutout innings. He surrendered four hits, walked one, and struck out four.

I was watching the game and the announcers made the comment that Lee would be working with pitching coach Chip Dill and that Dill would be an Asst. at UT next season. In addition to working with the Whitecaps, he was an assistant at Tusculum last year. He went to Cerritos College, so I guess that's the connection to CDS...

Anybody heard anything about this or know anything more about Dill?

Lee struck out in his first at bat.
