Sirius radio Bill King disses Defensive staff

What, if anything, does that have to do with it?

It's OK to suck it up because they did it to Missouri too?

What is so hard to understand?

Auburn had an elite offense withe the best offensive coach in the game.

Mizzou won 12 games and still had no answer for the Auburn offense.

All bets are off when facing an offense like that - especially when your team is severely outmanned from a talent standpoint.

We were at the same level as Florida in the 90s yet in '95 turned a 30-14 lead into a 63-37 loss.

When you play someone that explosive the points can add up very quickly. It's not like all of their other opponents were able to shut Auburn down and Tennessee was the only one that had trouble defending them.

2 returns for TDs in our game inflated the score as well - yes our D was bad, but special teams had issues also.

I don't really know what the problem is. Defense was MUCH improved last year. Gotta think two years with coaching turnover will only help to improve again this year.

Idk.. just from looking at the season averages we were only 50 yards better per game than the so called worst defense in UT history. And that is saying even less really since our opponents didn't have to pass and pick up bigger chunks of yardage. They were getting anything they needed on the ground. Remember the Auburn or Mizzou games.. Yeah I don't like to either.

So while there were improvements made, there is still a LONG way to go. Recruiting at this high level will solve a lot of these problems though. Too early to put a coach on the hot seat.

But the OP did say 18 months from now. That is not actually all that outlandish, if you ask me. And not saying I am pointing the finger anywhere yet, but if you forced me to point to a part of the staff that I'm not confident in, it's definitely the defensive side of the ball, Thigpen excluded.

You know.....crazy thought, I know. But....if Butch told Jancek to move on....I wonder if he would go after Chavis. Not a "go get em'" Recruiter....but family still lives here, loves UT, and his results speak for themselves.

Just a thought. I hope to see much improvement this year in technique if nothing else.

We don't have the money to draw Chief here even if he able to retain decent coaches (Wilcox) instead of being a constant merrygoround, I don't think any quality position coach wants to come to the UT. I'm 100% a Vol man but the truth is what it is.

A defensive coordinator isn't a position coach. Tennessee has more money than LSU and most other programs. Even with our money reserve in the tank and still paying useless past coaches.

He is just a little short guy who wants to act big. He wants to be a big guy sooo badly. He went to UT and used to have a huge show back in the day before internet came along. Well, Bob Bell made the show, but he thought he did. He was wrong as usual. He knows nothing about recruiting and he used to hang his hat on it. He is very very seldom ever right about anything. He used to think he was close to the program and had the "in", but something happened between he and the Fulmer staff years ago. They shut him down and wouldn't let him in anymore. So he made it his personal crusade to dog the Vols every day for the rest of his life. All of this is true.......

Someone else who is old enough to remember the facts.

You do realize Auburn wasn't the only one the D crapped the bed on, right?

the major reason that staff changes are coming are because additional stud recruiters are needed. at least 2. Thigpen can't last long at the pace he is on.. defense will not be all that good this year allowing changes on that side of the ball...

Dang...this is the most worrisome post I've seen this year. The idea that our best recruiter is about burned out and we might have to make wholesale changes to the defense. Lord help us if CBJ decides to go to the 3-4.

:beerf: to our defense stepping up this year.

Jancek and Martinez have been on the chopping block since they stepped foot on campus by some fans. They think they know for a fact that a Butch Jones led team and more experienced Jancek/Martinez doesn't have a chance because Martinez stunk it up as a DC a couple of years at Ga several years ago. He's not a DC anymore, so I don't even know why that's an argument. Most of it is ill informed or just a popular stance to take.
Who knows if it will work out but I thought they were far from the problem last year. Our db's broke on the ball better than we have in many years, got a lot of picks and had virtually zero help up front. Palardy was the 2nd fastest player at our pro day and we had db's there running 4.8 40's
If you are going to judge, do it on what they do with some comparable talent and if they need to move on it will take care of itself. Dooming them because of whatever may or may not have happened with another team years ago in a different era for a different coach and in a past decade seems ridiculous to me. And I know the lazy argument that history repeats itself but if a man/coach doesn't learn from mistakes made as a younger man/coach then he needs to go ahead and gtfo of the profession anyway.
Sorry for the quasi rant.

They did at ga n got fired.

Jones's defensive coaching staff have been with him a long time. They have put A LOT of talent in the NFL. His defensive players get drafted A LOT. How many young men have bill put in the NFL? How many have you?

Jones' staff are successful exactly BECAUSE they have been together for so long. Jones prides himself on the consistency of his staff. This is knee deep horse pucky and yet again I have to disagree with .... where do you people come up with this mess? I'm STUNED by the amount of falsehood.

Jones is KNOWN for putting defensive guys in the NFL BECAUSE of his staff. To boot, we just hauled in a pants load of defensive recruits that makes bam a jealous. A defensive haul like this hasn't been seen... since I don't know when....

This AM on Sirius college radio, Bill King predicted Butch would make defensive coach changes w/in 18 months. He said Butch swung and missed on a few defensive coaches but mentioned no names. What are your thoughts on who they will be & why?

The most interesting part is that he missed on some coaches. Wonder who?

The other point current def staff may be avg but bill king knows we need to have an above avg staff on def to win championship's n not just 8 games.

This is the reason they got fired from ga.

One of the most tired arguments out there is "so and so failed there so he can never succeed here" if that was true...under that scenario, how many Super Bowls would New England and Seattle own?

He's a UT guy but sometimes you wouldn't know it. I quit listening to his show back when CCM left. King had a guest host who called all UT fans racists because of the petition & the fact we weren't upset Cuonzo was leaving. I figured if he was going to have people that ignorant sub for him, he wasn't worth my time.

That doesnt surprise me. I havent listened to him since he left 560 but while Bill knows college football inside and out, Bill is all about "good" radio. And his idea of good radio is anything that makes you listen, controversial or not. He roll out the red carpet for small mike since mike would stir the pot. He also loved Gator Jay for the exact same reason and after Jay passed his whole show was dedicated to him and even said quote "he was good radio".

Problem is he does know cfb. He'll spit out stats on any player and is on top of recruiting. If he doesnt know he'll tell you he doesnt (unlike other so called experts that will bs around the subject as if they know).

I don't listen to this guy but sounds to me like he googles it right before he spits it out. Also sounds like he's more interested in earning a paycheck in the off season than facts.

eeehhh. Maybe but he says more than something you can google. Very in depth on a player, more that you can get from a google search.

Its funny when people with no connection to the team, without Orange glasses, gives an opinion it is immediately dismissed as some sort of misguided hate against UT

These people do this for a living. Even UT fans said that Jancek was going to be Jones' Achilles heel.

Jones can't afford to hold on to sub par coaches if he's going to turn this ship around and headed in the right direction

Jones is the key

Bill King is a Tennessee grad if I remember correctly and his wingman on the show is a huge vols fan. They are also based in Nashville.
They do not hate the Vols on that show. They are a pretty good college football show all in all , he tries to be fair to everyone and not be a Vol/SEC homer.

Bama jealous of our defense recruiting efforts? With all the five star defense recruits they have? Well, all I can say is: Aw Cisco! Aw Poncho! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

All our defense needs is some studs that can put some pressure on the QB. IT is amazing how getting constant pressure on the QB can make your whole defense better.

Most rushing yards ever in 3 consecutive games(over 900)

Most points ever allowed in Neyland

Most rushing yards in a game ever allowed in Neyland

Sunseri can't claim that

It's funny, people just pretend like this didn't happen. The company line is everything is awesome and Butch can do no wrong. Anything that may not jive with that is completely scrubbed from the history books lol.

I think it's funny that Jancek gets a pass because of the talent he was left but Sunseri will forever be labeled as the worst DC in UT history for pretty much the same reason.

Sunseri had very little to do with the talent he inherited just like Jancek. There was/is a lack of speed on the defensive side of the ball but that should be on Wilcox much, much more than Sunseri. Sunseri is a great position coach but not a DC.

The past 2 D's UT has put on the field were absolutely horrible. If Jancek gets a pass, so should Sunseri. Wilcox and Dools are really to blame.
