Star Worshipping

How is a subscription to Volquest any different than one to the News Sentinel or Sports Illustrated? Are all those people gullible as well?

Can you name these people?

I don;t subscribe to SI, because is is basically a rehash of old news that I previously read. I would not pay one thin dime to join VQ.

It is news that I will read online or hear about soon enough. Why pay for something just so you can read about it 30 seconds before it breaks online?

The magazine publishers love the suckers who buy into their "star systems" and use it as their bible to prove themselves right.

I wasn't a fan of the Dooley hire but I really like him. He recruits home grown Tennessee boys, and other athletes who are high character people. I think he will struggle at first but given a couple of years he will prosper.

One of his high character guys has already been arrested.

Again, please tell me what makes Dooley's guys high character.

Easy to say when you are a Florida fan. Things are looking mighty nice in Gainsville these days. We, on the other hand, have had to settle on recruiting a different caliber of player. Can't compete with you guys right now for top players. Hopefully that changes in the next few years.

the point essentially is that no one knows who the hell any of these kids are, whether they be 3* or 5*. you've never seen them play and have no clue how good they will be. that's any school.

so, the only thing you can do is trust the staff. alabama and florida don't sweat a 3*getting a scholly (and they both give 3* scholarships) because people figure if urban or saban offered them a scholly they must be good.

if you believe in dooley, then these players will turn out just fine. if you don't, you're scared. i understand being scared, because you have no track record to go by.

but, the point is recruiting is total and complete faith in the staff. people act like they know these kids when they commit. people know jack.

as i look at our recruiting class and who we are targeting one thing stands out to me. i have never seen tennessee give so much time to 3 stars in my lifetime. i know we are down right now but that isint to say that we could be in it with alot of 4 stars and maybe some 5 stars...

so is dooley trying to collect all the low lying fruit?

if you think about it, when you go after 4 and 5 stars you are going to have to compeate with florida and bama and all the programs who are in their glory days right now.

OR

if you go for all the BEST 3 stars and kids who are under the radar you will be able to devote ALOT of time to them and show them alot more love than the other big programs bc they are all fighting over the 5 stars. so instead of fighting over the scaps of 5 stars and 4 stars that other top programs leave is tennessee putting in the time with all the 3 stars so they can have their pick of that lot?

ill hang up and listen...

per Jhop:

I think the difference between evaluating talent and recruiting talent is the difference. You have to get kids who fit your scheme, want to work hard. Not every 4 and 5 star fits this bill. Also Dooley and staff also recognized way before any of us they were going to lose A LOT of battles for these top guys against Bama, Florida, among others this year. So as opposed to a month before NSD and taking a ton of low 3 and 2 star fallbacks, they are looking at solid athletes that they have a great shot with. It's a tactical move, it will pay off, maybe not this year, but in a year or two.

BTW the difference between a solid 3 star and mid level 4 star is minimal at best.

July.

the difference between our commits and some 4 stars are very fractional. And so far I don't see any head cases (Ambles) or drama queens (BB, Nuk'em). they seem rather - low key.

This is good.

and yes... I'm not convinced there's a single true 5-Star receiver this year, and I believe there are at least 3 5-Star TE's, and probably 4, but will they all stick there, or are they jumbo athletes?

This maybe the yr to land us another Jason Witten

:wink2:
Cam Clear...

Fair enough. I see your point. Nick Saban and Urban Meyer both offer 3* prospects scholarships, I understand that, but the percentage of players that are 3* players in their signing class is not nearly as high as ours is. It certainly is not the majority. I do not have a problem with signing 3 star prospects, but for the majority of a class to be 3*'s is a little worrisome, especially when we have to play in the SEC.

I think he's just recruiting..
On top of the fact that we're just a hard sell right now, I'm sure Dooley realizes that above all else he has to address our numbers problem. He has to balance recruiting the "best" players with bringing in guys who are low risk to leave the program. We just can't handle much attrition in the next couple of years.

Based on what?

Coleman is a three star CB rated #22 by Rivals,, ranks a 5.7 rating.

the player who is a 4 star above him, committed to Texas at #19 CB is rated a 5.8

.1 difference,, is about as close as it can get. Coleman will be a 4 star unless injured this coming year. Get some joy Man :)

Also take Tom Smith a three star,,,

Ranked #43 by rivals and rated a 5.6 on the power scale.

The #23 RB currently uncommitted is rated a 5.8 on th epower scale.

Very little difference. Maybe Tom will jump the whole .2 points and get to be a 4 star before its over as well.

More Joy! :dance2:

With Coleman you could say measureables.

He's 5'11"/180, benches 275, has a 44" vertical, and placed 2nd in the 300 hurdles Ga Cls AAAA. That means he's strong for a HS DB and probably has a legit 4.4.

Downs (assuming he does switch) is 6'6"/230, runs a 4.7 or so, has soft hands, and a 30 ACT... and wins slam dunk contests. IMHO, the reason he isn't being considered with the other top TE's is exposure and competition. He does all of the things that recruiting analysts usually drool over.

LV has alluded to the fact that Rivals hasn't spent the resources or done the work that they've done in the past. Their only rating came late and has not been updated. It sounds like they had economy related cutbacks.

Since Scout and ESPN ratings have always been a little suspect and Rivals is maybe off their game... stars might mean less this year than in the past. Add to that the restrictions the NCAA imposed a couple of years ago for testing strength and speed at camps... and there's a good chance that the recruiting svcs will not be as reliable.

It's July. Most of the players are 3* players right now. The ratings of players will be adjusted after camps and their senior years are complete. Some of our 3* players will be 4* players by February.

I think LV or someone figured that Rivals will probably add more than 60 more 4-5* players... hopefully he'll read and correct this if it is wrong.

Having watched this for a few years now, it is very likely that 10-20% of the guys currently 4* will move down as other guys emerge that are deemed more deserving. Happened to Preston Bailey a few years ago.

That have comitted so far are 3 star athletes. Just checked it out on rivals. Justin Coleman is also a 3 star. Anyone know what Pat Martin is?
