Why is Thompson boling arena.....

Guys I understand what you are saying. All I was trying to say that if people are gonna complain about an empty TBA, which 100 percent of VolFans should hate, then the coach needs to do something. I'm not saying Martin should be a marketer first, coach second. I understand the AD has to promote the team and coach. All I am saying is that a coach is gonna notice an empty or quiet TBA and he should take it upon himself to fix that. All I was doing is comparing how quickly the support and fan base expanded in the first year of the previous coach in the first few games compared to now with Martin. I'm not hating on anyone or wishing ill will. I live four hours away from Kville and I've heard hardly anything preseason and start of season about our team like I did with Bruce. Just saying that a coach that knows he has a hard job to follow one of the 2 best coaches we had.

So fans would come to the games if he did more interviews, painted his chest, and campaigned? That's just stupid. If fans want to come, they will. Once we win, they'll come.

I'm sure that everything would be fixed if Martin got on the radio or ESPN and said, "Now I want to see all the fans at the game because we're going to kick Pitts ass!" That would galvanize the fan base similar to MLK Jr. speeches during the civil rights movement.

Funny thing is I alway see a lot of posters bashing the fans and fan base here. And a lot of those people, I'm sure, aren't spending their time and money going to the games. :whistling:

I'm not sure if you are referring to me or to others. For clarification: I have been a football season ticket holder for 7 years and have missed about 5 games in that time. I also attend as many basketball games as I can, with some work- and family-related conflicts being the usual reason I'm not there (which are, obviously, worse during cold and flu season). Apologies if I misunderstood your response.

Many still aren't over Bruce being gone. Some are even awaiting his return. Can you say the same about Buzz after his departure?

I'm not sure it's really fair to compare the two situations. Basketball fans were hoping for the team to reach new heights. Bruce did that. Outside of the hardcore bball fans like us, it's as if people are too bitter to care anymore. They expected a huge splash of a hire and didn't really get it. They fail to understand the position the team was left in after the whole incident.

Get some good wins and the crowd will come. We missed a few of those chances, no doubt. There's still a lot of basketball to be played though... conference play gives us plenty of opportunities.

So freaking quiet? I swear the littlest college's are louder than us! You shouldn't be able to hear hands clapping like its in your ear.

I know nothing that great has happened yet but I mean dang.

You have to have something to cheer about. It got pretty loud when TN made a run. But fans are not going to get excited about blowing out a cupcake or getting beat at home by a decent team like Pittsburg. When we were beating teams like Ky, Al, etc Thompson rocked.

Make that one of the best coaches in basketball and I'll agree with you.

If Martin doesn't understand the value of marketing the program in getting people to attend as well as in recruiting that is just a mark against him. If he can recruit top talent and beat top teams he will be successful. If not he'll go the way of all of tns other coaches.

We don't have a passionate fan base for basketball. That's one of the reasons it is difficult to recruit elite players. KY fills it up for pre-season practice, while we have fans sitting on their hands and leaving when the game is still in the balance. However, it is likely these fans who complain the loudest about us not having an elite program.

Sad that you won't be around to see it.
Sold your season tickets and going to die before it happens. Very sad. Bye willie.

Amen.

I would say we had a big crowd for Pittsburgh game. The attendance was 17,249. No arena is going to be loud for the whole game those. Maybe at small places that have a bigger student section.

This isn't directed at anyone in particular. Why does it always devolve into the former coach vs. the new coach argument? The OP asked a question about why it's not loud.

I watched the Pitt game at home, on TV at least, there seemed to be a good crowd. The team is running up and down the floor, the camera shows the courtside seats while following the action. The people I see sitting in THOSE seats, didn't seem to do much cheering, even less standing and that doesn't seem to be much different than the Pearl era in my view. Sure if there are more people in the stands it might be louder on television and in the arena, but it's not coming from THOSE seats.

As for the never ending "which coach is at fault" debate...well, if nothing else both Pearl and Fulmer raised the expectations of the fan base, which makes it hard on the men that follow. That is a good thing.

I have been to TBA for games under the last 4 coaches. The old people don't like for you to be too loud and don't make much noise. That seems to be a big part of the crowd and has always been like that.

It always turns into a new coach old coach debate because that is what some folks, me inclided like to talk about. As far as the noise factor, I have been to every home game and several road games in the last 40 years except for some I missed when Houston was the coach and I just couldn't get up the interest to go over there. I have seen Thompson Bowling be as loud and as wild as any place in the country when we were beating teams like KY and Fla when Lofton was bombing in 3s from mid court, When he nailed the 35 footer over Durant the roar almost lifted the roof off. When we are playing cupcakes and blowing them out there is nothing to get excited about. When good teams come in here and you expect this team to lay down for the last five mins of the game there is nothing to get excited about. Can you imagine how exciting it will be when KY comes in here and beats TN by 50 points.

The constant trolling is really starting to get tiresome. I mean, I get that you find it amusing for a while, but Jesus Christ, knock it off. You clutter the entire basketball forum with nothing but utter crap.

OK.

Don't mean to be flip. You've obviously been to more games than I. Sure, an exciting game against a ranked opponent, and it's close, up until the very end, and Loften or McBee nails a three to win a big game. Sure,but...um...what about the rest of the game, the other 38 minutes?

The coaches don't have control of the courtside seats, if they did, they'd like to see some enthusiastic students, literally... behind them. It would make for better TV. jmo, respect yours.

Could not agree with you less. Fans can make a difference by energizing our players while intimidating the road team. The i have to have something to cheer for is azz backwards thinking. You cheer for your team thru good and bad. This fan base never get into games regardless of the opponent until the cosches and players wave their arms around begging for some noise. I have been going to games since i was kid in the 70' at stokley. That place rocked but it was a different fanbase back then there wasn't the show me something then i will approve of you crowd. Our Vols was on the court and that was all that was needed. Oh Neyland rocked then too. Go Vols!

I have been going to the games and cheering for the Vols since the sixties and until Peyton showed up and
our former coach in basketball we were a wasteland with
not a chance to compete on the national stage except for Pat. When we start putting marks in the win column
instead of trying to win a national championship in moral
victories the fans will show up and cheer.

You have not gone to many games, have you? TBA has been anything but an "exciting and thriving basketball environment" ......except for a very few rivalry/big games. Honestly, if you would rather have someone who goes for the "wow" factor over building a solid program, then I have to question your intelligence.
